What are the rules for extending a tourist visa in Thailand, particularly for those holding a TR visa?

Just a heads up for TR visa holders who want to get a 30 day extension for their visa. I escorted a friend of mine to Udon Thani immigration the other day. He wanted to get immigration out of the way when he reported for TM30 after arrival. The officer on duty denied accepting his application. He quoted a rule saying visa extensions can only be applied for in the last 30 days before the leave date on his entry stamp. Kinda increases his travel budget by a couple of thousand Baht as he intended to hike around the mountains in the North. Now, he has to interrupt his hike and bear the extra time to go all the way to an office.

TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses the challenges faced by TR visa holders in Thailand seeking to extend their visa. A user recounts an experience where their friend was denied a 30-day extension at the Udon Thani immigration office due to regulations stating that extensions can only be applied for in the last 30 days before the visa's expiration. Various comments provide additional insights, including inconsistencies between immigration offices, the possibility of applying for extensions at different times, and the influence of proper TM30 reporting on the extension process.

Totally normal

Chiang Mai, Buriram, Phuket, & Bangkok ALL let you get an extension when you have 45 days or less left on your current stamp <- meaning IF you arrived on a visa exempt entry stamp you could go straight to the immigration office and get an extension at those offices

I don't know ANY immigration office in the country that'd let someone on a 60 day tourist visa get an extension shortly after flying into the country.

As "inconvenienced" as your friend will be IF he wants that extra 30 days, he needs to suck it up and go back to an immigration office in month.

OR

IF he does indeed hold a 6 month METV <- multi-entry tourist visa he could just bounce out and back in to get a NEW 60 day entry. There is no limit to them as long as they visa is valid.

We are done, thanx for the update, good luck to your friend.

I don't know the whole story or situation, it seems to me that a couple thousands Bahts are small amount of money to pay for avoiding all the hassle.

BTW I never heard of anyone extend the visa same day come here, this is something you do near the end of your first 30 days.

you can‘t do it at the end of the first 30 days either. You have to wait for the second 30 days to start.

Okay but still whats the problem, can just do it later...

this is where the confusion comes in, you can extend a 30day Visa exempt the day you arrive so there may have been an assumption that the same thing can be done with a Tourist Visa.

this is just silly! He dont have to report at all, and when he want to extend for another 30 days he can do at any Immigration office near where he is at that time. Just need to stay at a hotel or whatever that day there.

I live in Udon myself, probably the most easy Immigration office in thailand.

Immigration don't give a shit about the TM30 for tourists, so forget that part. As for the extension "inconvenience" he should of got a 6 month METV if he didn't want to be "inconvenienced"

not needed in Bangkok, looks like others offices are enforcing what they want as per usual

He does have that M version of a TR visa, but wants to stay 90 instead of 60 days. Without TM30 he will most likely not get any extension from what I understand.

I agree with Robert in the sense that irrespective of budget, it's up to the travellers to adhere to the host conditions regarding extension submission times etc. Just tell you friend to go and check into a cheap hotel for on night and ask for the screenshot of the submission the go and apply for the extension... all problems solved. As for submitting a TM 30 camping... I wouldn't even worry about it

the problem is that the rules are not always applied equally, some require a tm.30 some dont, some can apply for an extension more than days before and some cant. It makes it really challenging, I understand

It is exactly why I made this post: To let people know about this regulation. The most google-popular online resources do not mention this limitation at all. They just list immigration location and fees, but lack to refer to fineprint.

With over 70 Immigration Offices nation wide, I do not believe the increase of budget by couple of thousands Baht. He can visit any office in the area where he is hiking

With some preparation this issue should be known and dealt with before you step in the plane. Sorry, but there is no country that deals with tourist who come to visit and I want and you as country has to adjust to my needs.

It is certainly an inconvenience. Question is how he can file TM30 every day when living out of a tent. Hope he will find an officer who has symphaty with his travel style when he finally can apply for the extension. I think similar issues apply to people who want to stay on remote islands and or live on a boat.
