TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster is inquiring about their options for staying in Thailand as their work permit is set to expire. Various commenters clarify that the work permit expiration does not dictate their ability to stay, as it is the 'admitted until' date in their passport that determines their stay duration. They note that by entering Thailand via an airport, a UK passport holder can receive a 30-day visa exempt entry, whereas a border run will only grant a 15-day entry, with a limitation of two per year for land entries. Additionally, they suggest alternatives such as applying for a SETV (single entry tourist visa) for an extended stay.

It doesn't matter when your work permit expires :/ What is your "admitted until" date stamped in your passport. That's what lets you stay here, a work permit just lets you work

, Hmm, that means you either go to a thai consulate in another country and buy a tourist visa or you border bounce for a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.

Since Dec 31st 2016 they went back to 30 day visa exempt entries by land borders, BUT put a limit of TWO per year. There is no official limit of them when flying in.

as a UK passport holder you don't / cant do visa on arrival - you can enter on a visa exempt entry valid for 30 days.
