So, it's finally official. The visa period reduction has been published in the Thai Royal Gazette just now and effective!
Answer summary
The new Thai visa rules, effective September 15, 2026, will reduce the visa-free entry period from 60 days to 30 days for most travelers from visa-exempt countries. Those entering before September 15 will retain their original 60-day stay with a potential 30-day extension. Extensions will no longer be automatic and will require valid reasons at immigration offices. Travelers are encouraged to apply for a tourist visa if planning to stay longer than 30 days.

great. me and my NON-O retirement visa (50yoa+) will have a drink tonight to the always changing, always updating TOURIST visa scheme.

as long as the 90 day reporting does not change to 60. i really care less of tourist visa's.

the main reason to go to
*****
from
*****
was the years coming out of COVID. the same nations that i will not name (India) abused it and here is again. The fact is if you come from europe, US or Canada 30 days is enough and 60 if you are having fun.

no big deal.

Wow, that is close as I have a return flight arriving in Thailand on the 9th September and departing on the 5th November.

People keep stating one can just buy an extension if only 30 days. That is not the problem. The problem is that the airlines will not let you check in to make your journey to Thailand if you don't have a return flight within the 30 days when the 30 days kicks in.

The only solution then is to buy in advance a flight from Bangkok to Malaysia within the 30 days one way purely to satisfy your airline that you have pre booked flight out of Thailand and then apply for a 30 day extension when in Thailand.

Jim *********
Jim *********
Matthew Bacon the entry or tourist "tax" is a ฿450 fee to help cover medical in case of an accident which happens quite a bit. I am always reading about someone uninsured and having a large hospital bill they can't afford to pay after an accident. It still hasn't passed, it's in the public comment phase and won't take effect for 180 days after it is published in the Royal Gazette. And visa exempt was 30 days for decades. It has been 60 days only the past two years.

Key Timeline

September 14, 2026: The last day to enter Thailand and receive a 60-day entry stamp.

September 15, 2026: The date the new rules go into full effect. All subsequent visa-free arrivals drop to 30 days.

What happens to current Travelers?

Grandfathered In: If you enter Thailand on or before September 14, you will keep your full 60-day stay.

No Retrospective Cuts: Immigration will not retroactively cut short a 60-day stamp received before the deadline.

The New Rules Breakdown (Starting Sept 15)

30-Day Visa Exemption: Applies to 60 countries and territories (including the UK, US, Australia, Canada, and EU states).

15-Day Visa Exemption: Reduced to just two nations: Mauritius and Seychelles.

Extensions: You can still request a 30-day extension at a local Thai immigration office, but approvals will switch from automatic to discretionary based on your reason for staying.

The change from 60 to 30 days has been published in the Royal Gazette today, as of August 31. It will be in effect 15 days later, by September 15.

Keep in mind only 60 countries remain from the former 93 countries whose citizens are elegible for visa-exempt entry.

For those for whom the 30-day visa-free entry plus the 30-day extension are not suitable, the alternative is to apply for the 60-day single-entry "Tourist Visa Leisure," the stay permit duration of which can also be extended by 30 days.
