What are the implications of renewing a retirement visa on multi-entry stamps in Thailand?

Multi entry gotcha!

I recently renewed my retirement visa a month before it was due. I made the mistake of assuming that my previous visa stamp and multi entry was valid until the expiry date. No so, the new one replaces the existing stamp.

As I didn't have a new re entry stamp I was nearly denied entry as the previous multi entry stamp was invalidated with the new visa stamp.

Fortunately after some discussion with a senior officer they allowed me to enter.

TLDR : Answer Summary
This post discusses the impact of renewing a retirement visa on a multi-entry visa stamp in Thailand. The author mistakenly assumed that their previous multi-entry stamp remained valid after renewing their visa. However, the new visa stamp invalidated the previous multi-entry stamp, almost resulting in a denial of entry upon return to Thailand. The conversation includes comments from other users clarifying the implications of visa stamps and discussing extension options.

I've always just bought the multientry with the extension. Why wouldn't you? Was there a particular reason?

Interesting. So multi re-entry is extension specific rather than date specific.

What did you enter on ? What does the stamp say in your passport, best to check the stamp just in case you were stamped in Visa exempt.

you don't even know how lucky you were ๐Ÿ˜ฎ They had NO obligation to let you in on a re-entry permit from the old extension (whether it had expired or not it was tied to the OLD extension and you were on a new one)

They could have told you that you get in free stamp 60 days and start all over from scratch with a new Non-O, then they year 2 months later.

You really lucked out getting stamped in on that new extension with the old re-entry permit. ๐Ÿ™‚

What stamp did you enter on? Visa exempt? In which case you will need to start the retirement visa process over from the beginning again

Likely as allowed him to enter using his current extension of stay.

I had a mulit-enter stamp which expired with my extension. I renewed 1 week before it expired. They extended my new visa and I had to gi back Nov 7 to finalize. I traveled during that month so I had to buy a single entey stamp. Now I can get a multi-entry that expires Nov 7, 2026.
