I'm slightly confused. I understand the 400,000 bht requirement in a Thai bank to get the marriage visa. I also understand that I will need to get the 90 day non-o visa from my local Thai consulate. However, I saw a requirement that I need to show a financial amount of 20,000 bht to apply for that 90 day visa.

1. That seems like a very small amount; only about $600. Is that correct?

2. I assume that it can be in a US bank, but is there a certain amount of time that the deposit must be shown?

3. Can it be in a joint checking account with my wife, or does it need to be in a separate account in my name only?

4. If I can't use a joint account, can I show an IRA account that is in my sole name?

5. I realize that these are probably very dumb questions, but I want to make sure that I have everything properly arranged before I start. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is seeking clarification on the financial requirements for obtaining a 90-day Non-O visa and a marriage visa in Thailand. They understand the requirement of having 400,000 THB in a Thai bank for the marriage visa but are confused about the 20,000 THB needed for the Non-O visa application. Comments clarify that the 20,000 THB is not relevant to the marriage visa and provide insight on acceptable bank account types and required amounts for the visa application.

1. 20K is a bit low, are you sure? I've checked recently, and it was 1000 EUR in Paris and 800 USD in Ankara for single-entry non-imm visas.

2. Yes, in any bank is fine. Seasoning was not required in our case, but you'd better check with your embassy/consulate of choice.

3. Should also be fine, but best to check.

4. No idea.

5. OK ;)

Does this visa have to be applied for from out of country? And if so does it have to be applied for online?

20,000 baht is the amount of cash a tourist can be required to show to enter Thailand. It's not relevant to a marriage visa at all.

To get the marriage visa from your embassy, you need to check what their requirements are. It will be a local equivalent to 400,000 baht in your local currency. Generally the only requirement is that you can show a bank statement (in your name only) with the amount of money. Some embassies MIGHT accept a joint bank account, but you would need to show double the required amount since only 50% of the money is yours. An IRA account would not qualify.
