Has anyone gone through the process of renewing their OX visa? And can share their experience? My initial five year term ends next August. I reached to the consulate in NYC where I had initially obtained the visa and they directed me to Thai immigration. Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion focuses on the challenges of renewing or extending the OX visa in Thailand. Several commenters share their experiences, indicating that extensions are largely unattainable within the country, with many suggesting applying for a new OX visa or pursuing a Long Term Residence (LTR) visa through the Board of Investment (BOI). Key issues highlighted include the stringent requirements for extensions, lack of successful cases within Thailand, and the confusion at local immigration offices.
LONG TERM RESIDENT (LTR) VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
About all you can do is go to your local immigration office and talk to them. Be prepared for them to have that 'deer in the headlights' look, and/or for them to make up rules on the spot because rather than them saying they've never done an OX extension they'll just make up reasons why you can't get it ๐
Not wanting to rain on your parade but since that visa rolled out back in back in Nov 2016 I have NEVER EVER heard of even one single case where anyone was successful in getting a 5 year extension on an OX visa in country at their immigration office ๐ ๐

Tod is correct, had an O-X and could not extend it in Bangkok, they just made excuses , on my last try a supervisor came to talk she said leave the country and come back visa exempt and apply non O, which is what I did. This was early this year

Last year, I went with someone to Chaengwattana Immigrations in Bangkok who held an OX visa so they could see what the requirements for the extension were.
They were told by the immigration person either go back to their country and get a NEW Non-OX visa or just go thru the BOI and get a Long Term Residence (LTR) visa because they had never ever extended an OX visa inside the country and this was at the main immigration office in Bangkok ๐ฎ ๐
I concur with that advice and I would say either go back to the US and get a new OX visa to get 5 years again OR apply for an LTR visa thru the BOI website under the 'wealthy pensioner' category.

First you wouldn't been renewing anything ๐ You don't renew visas, they run out when they run out. You would be applying for an 'extension of stay' at the immigration office serving the area where you live here
Second you wouldn't go thru the embassy as they have nothing to do with that visa after they sell it to you. Extensions are handled by the immigration office
Just so you're clear about it though
There has never been a case of ANYONE <- as in not a single person EVER that got an extension on an OX visa. ๐ฎ
The requirements are so stringent as far as the banked money, etc that no one ever got one.
The Aussies (who used to get the OX visas easily from Sydney before the eVisa system) and who had the most OX visas issued of any country never even extended them, they used to just get a new OX and get the 5 year stamp when they entered the country
