What are the chances of re-entering Thailand after being denied entry due to insufficient funds?

Hello,

I have a question. I was denied entry into Thailand. Insufficient funds as I wasn't carrying 20,000 baht cash. I've been in Thailand for a long time and had a mix of Ed visas, b visas, and tourist visas. Also, I am finishing my Masters at Chula and I was stupidly not on an Ed visa as when I went to apply in Laos the paperwork had been wrong and they'd offered to give me a tourist visa instead so I took that. I then went back to Canada for a month and got a multi-entry tourist visa as I am pretty much done my studies and wanted to stay longer. They didn't like that I had multiple tourist visas in my passport (two and then one B visa and one Ed visa from before). I just want to be able to get into the country for a few days as I do have stuff there and I'd like to go to my graduation ceremony. They marked that I had insufficient funds for entering. 2 and 9 in my passport.

What are the chances of me getting back into Thailand either right away or for my graduation ceremony in October if I were to have the money, a tourist visa, a flight back to Canada, hotel bookings, and a letter from Chula?

I don't think my university can get me a new Ed visa as I'm pretty much finished and I don't think they can get it just for my graduation ceremony but I am asking them.

Are there any recommendations?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user shares their experience being denied entry into Thailand due to not having the required 20,000 baht in cash, despite having a history of various visas and nearing completion of their Master's degree at Chulalongkorn University. They ask about the likelihood of re-entering Thailand for their graduation, given they now plan to present adequate funds and proper documentation, and seek recommendations from the community.

Q: will authorities take current bank slips showing their 20,000 baht balance OR do they want to see it in cash?

Need to show cash. The reason is clear.

There are TWO times you're asked for proof of funds.

When you enter the country you can be asked for proof of funds at passport control stamping in <- you must show CASH

When you are applying for a visa at a thai consulate and are asked for proof of funds <- you must show a bank balance

Okay, I think we've taken this as far as we can.

FIRST off with an extensive history of living in thailand on a mix of tourist visas, ED visa and B visas as the O/P admitted) it is NOT uncommon for the people at passport control to request any or all of the 3-proof-ofs (that have been on the books since the late 70's)

proof of adequate funds (CASH)

proof of onward travel (within the time you are allotted to stay)

proof of a hotel booking or confirmed lodging

The passport control people can ask for that from ANYONE entering the country. And before people chime in, it is totally irrelevant if you have an extensive history of entries to thailand yet were never asked for those things, the fact is you COULD be asked.

You will have NO problems entering the country by a land border, BUT I'd certainly do my due diligence as far as what border you're thinking of comin' in by.

Pon Thaeus they can ask for any or ALL of those 3-proof-ofz

Pon they were not asking for proof of onward travel they were asking for proof of funds.

It was weird though in that the officers were giving me advice... One of them was telling me to go to a land border with all the proper documents and just be prepared to be questioned. One of them was telling me which things I would need and to try and fly back in. One of them was telling me to get a new passport so the stamp wouldn't be noticeable.

Details like this are useful. Hopefully we'll hear more reports, so we can get a clearer picture. But it looks like someone told immigration to start enforcing this. These are the details that can help other travelers avoid the same pitfalls.

I travel internationally somewhat regularly, and I usually don't bother carrying cash because this was never enforced in the past. You may have saved many people the same headache you're experiencing by sharing. Thank you. Good luck getting back!

They were pulling lots of people aside but most people could show cash so were fine so I'd say as long as you can show cash you'd be fine.

Where were you denied entry? Suvarnabhumi? Any other details you can provide to help others avoid this in the future?

I wish I had answers for you. The above seems correct, that the visa was not cancelled and you just need to produce the funds. I'm sure someone with concrete knowledge will come in soon.

Thank you for sharing, hopefully we can learn something. I know I always should have cash. I'm on long term extensions of stay and have never been asked, most times I don't carry that kind of cash around.

It was a flight. I am currently in Hong Kong. There are no ATMs at the airport before immigration. I feel that it is done on purpose so that they can have a reason to stop people as they are a whole bunch of ATMs right on the other side. I asked if I could go across with an officer or if they'd take my card across and they said no.
