BBL Rant

I have the same passport and phone number for two years. I got a new phone and had to log onto my Bangkok Bank mobile banking. Should.be easy, not.

1 login with my passport number

and my birth date. Failed multiple

tries with an error saying the data

does not match.

2. I go to Central on Saturday. A bank

official pulls me aside. He tries

many things to check my data

and finds nothing. Too many errors

says to try again at 01:06 Sunday.

The man asks me to take pictures

of the errors (screenshot are

blocked)

3. I return to the bank on Sunday. The

man says easy fix but I miss my que

number and have to wait again.

turns out new rule that I have to

have a picture taken. Ok. I try again

but fail because I am required

to turn off wifi. Ok but fail again

because my phone number is

wrong but same number for 2

years!

Ok so I have to do a 6 page

document and wait a week to

change my number. However

my signature does match even

after many tries. Looks like a

good match to me.

4. I have to go to my home bank

to fix my signature. Not near to

me but no choice.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An expat shares their frustrating experience with Bangkok Bank after changing their phone and encountering issues with mobile banking access linked to their phone number and other identification that didn’t match the bank’s records. The difficulties included needing their signature verified, limitations due to new security procedures, and a lengthy process to update their phone number. Others in the comments echo similar frustrations, offering tips, sharing their own experiences, and questioning the bank's customer service and regulatory practices.

Should be easy? What's easy here ... I would never assume something's easy here in Thailand, these indigenous can't even walk straight, they really can't.
Rick ***********
BBL is getting difficult to deal with. Years ago you could do an ACH to the BBL branch in New York and get your money the next day in Thailand. Not anymore. Then they began closing branch offices im CNX by saying people want to use ATMs and don't need to deal with a person.

To top it off, my friend tried to exchange new 100 dollar bills at the Ruamchok BBL branch last week. They refused to accept the bills because they had a blue anri-counterfeiting band. The US Mint puts that on all new 100 dollar bills. They are on all new bills.

Meanwhile I keep 800,000 baht in a fixed account and get a measly 1.5% interest.

Customer service? Not at BBL.

Progress. I went to my Home bank. They requested a phone number change. Takes about one week. We will see then. Signature anomaly ifnored

@Glenn ****
I've been following the progress through this thread and it seems the problem has been your phone number was not recorded correctly on initial setup.

I'm with BBK and after each transaction I get an sms on my phone, with the transaction details and new balance. Were you getting these on your old phone?
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lloyd ********
yes I was getting sms so I did not understand. But the number that was getting rejected by the app is unknown. I let the bank today know but they have submitted a number change. I will see in a week.
Antonino *******
I changed my mobile one year ago, and I activated my BBK app by ATM without any issue, it was only necessary to write the phone number registered on my account to receive the OTP.
Andy *******
And it’s all because the lunatics have taken over the asylum
Michael *******
Useless MF’s - moved to SCB 5 years ago what a pleasure to deal with - all Paperwork for visa done in a day for B100 - BBK a frigging nightmare
Michael *********
Went through something similar this week with BBL, new phone and number. They did tell me that now the only thing that absolutely must be done at ones OG branch is replacing a lost bankbook. Your mileage may vary 555
Michael *********
I didn't have my passport with me, but they did let me finish setting up online banking with license and photo of my passport. But later when I went back after shopping (power was out) would not let me change money without my passport 🤷‍♂️
Nick ************
I just got a new phone and had many problems with krungthai app. At least they fixed it 700k from where i opened the account, eventually.
Robert ************
I had to completely remove a VPN from my phone, not just turn it off, if you have one
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Robert ***********
thanks but no vpn. I even deleated my anti virus app
Ken *******
Unreal
Ticha *****************
Absolutely Bangkok bank problem only. Everything must be done from branch that open account. I am Thai and hate using service from this bank. I prefer krungsri or scb
Pieter **************
@Ticha ****************
i try the MyMo app of the government saving bank on my new phone, even the branch where i have my account, can't help me. They don't accept my pink-ID or my Dutch passport. In Krungthai it was fixed in 10 minutes, so bkk bank is not the only one which give Aliens (foreigner) not the service they should

Nothing to do with visa advice.

can you read? If you can please read the name of this blog.

@Glenn ****
Yes. I can read. It’s a rant. But nothing to do with visas.

So, I guess this comes under the ‘everything else’ category.

Enjoy your rant.

@Glenn ****
Well, enjoy your dilemma. Not sure why you posted, but maybe someone has experience that can help.
Paul *************
Most sensitive information apps do tend to stop you from doing screenshot however the floor is it doesn't stop a second phone from photographing your phone and then sending you the picture is the way around it funny enough I had the similar problem recently but I was lucky I could go to the browser and not use the app to do it online it gave the options on the phone to do it as desktop version that let you reset with security question no one information so on if it's the same number it sent me an activation code to reset things?
Kevin ***********
Use another fone to take the screenshots, must have a spare fone surely
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Kevin **********
yes, my 3rd phone
Kevin ***********
@Glenn ****
NB use that for the screen shots as the app won't allow for security reasons and yeah I had the same problems last year
Paul ********
I did mine in the bank and was easy to do
Juli ***********
recently changed my phone, went to local branch of Bangkok Bank (not my branch) they did something on the atm then it worked!
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Juli **********
i understand that but changing that requires that your phone number matches their records. Mine did not.
Kevin ********
Get an account at another bank. Then close this account.
Jim ********
Mate I had a nightmare when I changed my phone and number. Like you say it should be an easy fix but it wasn’t at all. I opened my account in Bangkok and when I changed my number and phone I was in Phuket so went to the Phuket branch and they told me I had to do it at the branch I opened the account 😂. So they expected me to fly to Bangkok to change a phone number and get the app working on my new phone haha. A few days later after thinking that can’t be right I went into the same branch in Phuket and it was working within minutes. I think it’s down to who you speak with
Nick ************
Frank **********
The only problem I had when I changed phones was getting the picture right. Other then that it was easy. This was two months ago. Don't know why you are having a problem. I have Bangkok Bank too.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Frank *********
the app checks your phone number against their records. Mine dud not match
Frank **********
@Glenn ****
hmmm. Strange that it didn't. Anyway good luck.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Frank *********
yes very strange. I didn't even recognize the number they had.
Leong ***********
You need to go back to your Bangkok Bank home branch for almost any changes…..they need to compare your signature with their records that are only available at the home branch.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Leong ****
viewing the signature is available but not changeable at any branch. Thr signature is available from your pass book with a special light.
Tim ********
So be it. Pay attention to your number.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Tim *******
hiw would only possibly know that the bank had a different number.
Tim ********
@Glenn ****
in the queue
Glenn *****

@Tim *******
now i understand. The bank manager had me aside and was supposed to be taking care of me so I missed my number
Keef ********
switch to K Bank. easier.
Douglas *******
You need your old phone and delete the banking app on it first before trying on the new phone and yes turn off wifi first and use data. Did this at two different banks easy if you have your old phone.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Douglas ******
i don't, phone but it was factory reset. Trade in. That would still not explain how my phone number had a wrong on their records. The number in their records is unknown to me. Possible it was a traveler's sim when I first got to Thailand and only used for 2 days.
Douglas *******
@Keef *******
I agree only took about less then 10 minutes at K Bank but you need your old phone and delete the banking app on the old phone first. Same for Krung Thai. Wouldn't work if you don't delete app on old phone first. Sim card in wife's name no problem there either.
Manuel *********
Next time go to a BBL ATM get your card and reset your pin on any atm then you can login I swapped my phone 3x and every time I need to go to an atm or a branch so they reset the login for the banking pin. The only bank that get it right is kbank it just works
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Manuel ********
that's not it. Nothing to do with a pin. Problem is my phone number does not match in there database. Not a loging in issue. It is a setup issue.
Chris *****
@Glenn ****
tbh. There might be something in this. I changed numbers and my branch is far away. Lots of calls etc and one said to change my number on an atm. It worked! Worth trying
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Chris ****
are you saying that the atm has an option to change my phone number?
Chris *****
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Chris ****
finally found the atm setting for that. It didn't help unless it takes time
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Chris ****
won't hurt i will give it a try
Chris *****
@Glenn ****
it was doing my head in after changing my number. Every one I talked to said going to the original branch was the only option, until I spoke with the guy that said to do this and it worked!
Manuel *********
@Glenn ****
ah then mb
Jeffrey ************
I had similar problems after I got a new phone 😭😭
Kenny *****
@Jeffrey ***********
you mean new phone but same thai phone #? And it didnt work?
Glenn *****

@Kenny ****
correct it did not work
Andrew *********
Welcome to Thailand 🫣
John **********
You need your bangkok bank customer number, not your account number. I changed my phone a couple of months ago and it was easy
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@John *********
should be but as I said my signatures don't match and only fixed at my home bank.
John **********
@Glenn ****
I didn't need a signature to associate the app with my new phone so not sure what that's about
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@John *********
i explained. My Phone numerber did not match so I could not setup the app on my new phone. I had to go to the bank and have a picture taken (new) the my phone number didn't match. Could not change the number because my signature didn't match. Signature was only needed to change my number.
Wayne *********
@Glenn ****
I had same issue new phone. Walked into my bank walked out 10 minutes later all sorted, just asked to see my passport.
Peter **********
@Glenn ****
Makes totally sense to me. So you setup on a new phone with a new number and you are surprised that doesn’t work…Right, I would at the same time change my birthdate, address, surname, signature and bank account number. Possibly include changing your country, passport number and gender.

Much easier…

Ahem!

Really first you change, and once that is successful you change the other. When you get a new phone subscription and a new phone then first you install the new phone number on the old phone. Once successfully done, you move the shebang to the new phone, using the new number.

Using esims? Then first add the new esim to the old phone, etc etc etc. Change multiple things at the same time is asking for trouble and believe me, it’s not quite fair to blame the bank.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
That is because your phone number matches their records, mine did not for an unknown reason
Peter **********
@Glenn ****
Well, lesson learned: keep your information up-to-date. Check the bank records in your app and make sure they are correct. Sorry you had to learn this the hard way.
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Peter *********
my mbanking shows the correct phone number. I get.messages from them at my phone number. What else am I supposed to do
Peter **********
@Glenn ****
Well. It’s obviously all their fault and you never made a single mistake. I sympathize with you.
Glenn *****

@Peter *********
not a new number

Jeffrey **********
All this security Mumble jumbo is just getting ridiculous
Phil ********
@Jeffrey *********
Generally, and worldwide, they add complexity in the mistaken belief that it is security.

Phone / Phone Number / Passport / Address - change any and it is a nightmare.

My top tip - have at least 2 bank accounts and a Wise card, only ask for changes to one company at a time…..
Glenn *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Phil *******
i can't get a wise card here in Thailand and no way to get it in the USA.

Wouldn't help me any way. Having cash in hand is not a big issue. It is the regular deposits that I need.
Glenn *****

You need to update your device, the app wont recognize your new phone

@Steve ******
that is what I have been trying to do but I cannot do it because of the many hurdles that I talked about.

@Glenn ****
Ah ok, I just needed to update my device

Tis what it is TIT

you are not paying attention. My Phone number in BBL records are wrong. If they matched there would not be an issue except for the requirement for a photo.
