TLDR : Answer Summary
For a family of four looking to travel in Thailand for 6-12 months, there are several visa options available. One potential route is to utilize 60-day tourist visas alongside extensions, allowing for multiple entries and a total stay of around nine months by strategically leaving and re-entering Thailand. The Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) could provide a straightforward solution, granting flexibility for border runs. Additionally, the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) has gained popularity, although it requires a good financial standing. It's essential to stay informed about immigration regulations as they can change, and also consider alternative travel routes to neighboring countries for visa resets.

Depending on your citizenship, you can get 60 days, then pay a 1900 baht fee per person to extend for 30 days more. Then you can leave and generally repeat. However, since you need to leave anyways, consider doing a real trip somewhere else. Plug for Taiwan where I currently live, it is safe, clean, great public transportation, and you can experience Chinese culture without China! Taiwan gives 90 days on arrival to many countries. Also there are often very cheap flights to Taipei from Bangkok. I do the reverse for my 90 day border runs from Taiwan.

what is the cost of living like in Taiwan compared to Thailand ?

I haven’t lived in Thailand in over 15 years, but outside of Taipei or the other kaioshung prices are very reasonable. Trains go all around the island, and buses as well so it is easy to travel without a car here.

What is the best and cheapest country to do a boarder hop to ?

Usually one where your passport doesn't require a Visa to enter so you get in free

2 visa exemption entries with extensions and you’re sorted
Ajané **********
With the new visa exemption, you could do 60 days upon entry, then extend for another 30 days.. do a border run and then do the same thing again.. a total of 6 months. I have a family of five with little ones the same ages.. we’ve done this same process.

To add: you can do a land border run twice in one year.. so you could do this for a total of nine months

@Ajané *********
the twice in one year got scrapped with the visa changes I’m pretty sure
Ajané **********
@Paul ************
so are you saying you can no longer do that, or there’s no longer a maximum number of times you can do this?
Paul *************
@Ajané *********
yes these restrictions are no longer in place.

yes with 60 day entry true

A six months multiple entries tourist visa can easily give you up to nine months in Thailand used the right way. Quite straightforward to apply without any strict requirements.

do I have to leave and enter tho ?

@Chelsea ***********
in order to get nine months you’ll need to do two border bounces and apply for three extensions at your local immigration. Can be done fast, safe and cheap in some hours by a professional land border transport company.

You will have to leave around the 6 month mark to get the extra 90 days for the approx 9th months..
Graham ******
@Andi **********
you first exit after 90 days (60 on entry plus 30 extension) not 6 months, that's the second bounce
Andi ***********
@Graham *****
, yeah .... I was just talking about the final exit to get to the 9 ish month mark.

As a true tourist only planning a year or less with no history of staying in Thailand you likely can pull it off with visa free entries and extensions if your nationality qualifies.

60 days + 30 extension

Do that 2-4 times.

If you are pulled aside (not likely till the 3rd or 4th time) just explain and show you are not illegally working and do not plan to stay long term.

Worst case you go to a neighboring country if they won’t let you in or warn you about next time.

But honestly for real tourists I think you will be fine as long as you don’t push a year.

Side note if you want less hassle consider the Philippines. Depending on nationality you can extend up to 36 months without leaving the country and just a flight in and out resets it.

You could also just travel around regional. Do 90 days to start and 90 days to end in Thailand. Just add a few months in the middle visiting one or more other countries.

thanks so much for this !

but if you have a digital job & that is how you are funding this, then look at the DTV visa option. It might be less stress (not sure if less cost when you budget the amount of time and other options).
John *******
Each Thai consulate (varies by where you at located) list the visas that are available for you. The current hot visa is the DTV, but requires you to be a digital nomad and enough money in bank to cover each person 500,000 baht each.

thank you - someone mentioned a tourist visa can be extended to 90 days then , if you exit the country and re enter you could get an additional

days extended to 90 days ? Is this correct
Ralph *******
@Chelsea ***********
That’s basically correct. You can extend it at an immigration office. Most cities have one. It costs 1900 baht per person to extend.

The ‘border bounce’ allows you to do it all again. It is always at the discretion of the immigration officer but usually it isn’t denied. However, they do have the right to do so. There may also be a limit to the number of days you can stay in Thailand in this type of entry. 180 days rings a bell.

It does depend on your nationality, though. Not all countries are included in this.
John *******
@Chelsea ***********
- there is visa exempt (not tourist visa), depending on your citizenship. You arrive and are giving 60 days. You can then extend 30 days for a fee. Then you need to leave & and you can enter and repeat
