TLDR : Answer Summary
As border runs become less viable due to tightening immigration controls in Thailand, many expats are considering quick flights to neighboring countries for visa purposes. Suggestions from the community highlight various destinations such as Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Vietnam (Da Nang), and Singapore, which offer visa exemptions for certain passports. Comments indicate that flying is often more convenient and cost-effective than traveling overland to borders, especially with the appeal of affordable travel packages. Recent tightening of immigration policies means frequent visits to Thailand on tourist visas may pose risks of denial of entry. Therefore, expats are encouraged to explore nearby countries and consider longer stays while monitoring visa requirements.

Thailand used to be an expats dream. Unfortunately it seems that in an effort to sell retirement and long term visas has taken over their peanut sized brains and as usual they have no conception of what is really good for their country and how to manage it. They want our money of course, then why do they make it such a hassle to take it? The current Monarch, one of the richest men in the world, BTW, lives most of the time out of country. Let's his own population fend for themselves basically and live in relative poverty. Prostitution is technically illegal but not enforced. Let the farang support the villagers but then make it complicated for them to stay, even if they have the financial means. I mean, what other country can you be posted for making a negative review online about a business? There are just too many alternatives for successful people to retire or visit. The kingdom used to be nirvana. Now, not so much. Ruler too busy with all his mia noi and having them lay at his feet. Just my opinion... No hate, enjoy the kingdom... I just like to visit and go home

All borders aren't closed, but taking a weekend trip to Kuala Lumpur, Phnom Penh or Da Nang was always a better option. Tickets are cheap and you get to travel instead of sitting in a van for a full day.

Fly to Da Nang for a couple of weeks. So cheap to stay. Make sure you do your online visa about a week before you fly. Print a copy before you fly because you will need it to get your boarding pass. Have fun

did you mean Hua Hin??? Da Nang is not a God’s waiting room! On the contrary- younger crowd. Not really a party city tho

interesting comment. I live in Da Nang currently. Definitely not an old folks place. It’s not a party town like Phuket or Pattaya, more like a smaller Chiang Mai with a beach. Less than an hour drive to Hỏi An is very nice, too.

Ages are evenly distributed. Not at all like Pattaya or Hua Hin.

But the tourist mix is interesting. I lived in Phu Quoc several years ago and the tourist mix was mostly Vietnamese with maybe 15% foreigners, and of those they were tilted toward Europeans but a fair amount of Aussie, US, and Canada.

Current mix in Da Nang is Korean, Chinese, Indian, Russian with a low number of Euro, Aussie, US, and Canada.

I know, TMI!

I enjoy living here but prefer Thailand and look forward to moving there next year.

Cheers!

no I think that’s Hua Hin?🤔

Not sure what you mean by “lost art.” You can do border runs as well as short trips to neighboring countries. What’s happening more frequently now is that Thai immigration is tightening up on whether they will allow you back in if your passport is full of back to back Thailand 60 day visa exemption and 30 day extension stamps.

I know people who got denied entry after flying for a few days in a neighbor's country.

Momentary spiff, I wouldn't lose my mind. If you had plans on a walking border run, just fly. No biggy.

KL Malaysia offers Visa exempt stamps for some passports

You could also fly to southern Thailand and do a border crossing into Malaysia at Satun or Songhkla

Singapore offers visa exempt stamps stamps for certain passports

Vietnam offers visa exemption stamps for certain passports

You could fly to HK, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines basically anywhere where it’s within your budget range and timeline

2 land borders closed out of dozens doesn't make much of a difference
