TLDR : Answer Summary
The original post inquires about extending a tourist visa in Thailand as a UK citizen, exploring available options and how many extensions can be obtained in a year. Comments suggest various alternatives, including the Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV), which can be extended for 30 days, and the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), which is available only from the UK but allows for longer stays. Users also mention border runs and visa exemptions, alongside options for education visas and elite or investor visas for those who may wish to stay longer. It is noted that there are limits on border runs and visa exempt entries.

Elite visa if you don't mind spending the money.

A better option is to actually invest it in thailand then get an investor visa. You may actually get better returns than you would if you worked in Thailand.

.. the exact costs re. Elite visa.. ??

You might want to consider to get education visa. It can be extended up to one year. There are many different language schools. I go to ProLanguage at Asok.

Emily if you need to stay longer term after a few tourist visas there is always the ED visa option...that is if you wanted to learn Thai or another language...

A plethora of education Rob :)

Also -- ED visa stand for Education Visa -- not Erectile Dysfunction Visa -- incase there was any confusion.

Recently in the past year they changed the rules about who/what qualifies as a teaching institution. As such some places were only able to secure a 9 month visa, while others were able to do the full year. There are cheap non-credible options, which can cost you the price of tuition, visa fees, etc - and you will not be too much better off.

There used to be tests involved to allow you to continue. I have never heard of anybody failing - but I suppose that can be done.

Also there is the cost of tuition and the time commitment. Some places require that you're in the classroom 20 hour a week or something.

Probably goes without saying - but... Before you make a commitment - try to find someone who has the experience you seek, with same nationality and do it like they do it.

I had ED for a while and am still studying Thai after I finished using the visa. I enjoy it. Very satisfying to learn a new language and use it in every day life...and if you get a visa as well....then all good :) Terary is talking about paying a dodgy school to get you the visa without studying. I would NOT advise that...!! You used to be able to get one for ''studying' Muay Thai as well....may still apply. .

What do you mean?

You don't necessarily have to learn a language. This option option also has it's complications.

Yeah I was thinking about doing that in April! Really interested
Tony *********
So if you only went to Ranong you get 7 months
Tony *********
So your on a SETV so you can extend that then go to Ranong 30 days extend that then back to Ranong 30 days extend that.

Then you have to leave the country.

SETV OR 30 DAYS.
Steve ******
METV what paperwork is required please?

Liverpool gone?

Steve Hall then look at what ever thai consulate in the UK you're going to use for the requirements. You can use Hull, Cardiff or London.

This is what London requires;

I’m heading back to the U.K. in April.

you can't get an METV from ANY thai consulate in S/E Asia unless you hold permanent resident status in the country of the thai consulate you're applying at.
Tony *********
You can only do 2 border runs in a calender year.
Fredrik *********
That's rule is only for visa exemption over land borders. While flying there isn't any official limit
Tony *********
Or the SETV + 30 And go to different places to get the SETV.
Tony *********
Ranong is your nearest way out of THAILAND from where you are.
Tony *********
You can go to Ranong to get ferry to a BURMESE ISLAND and come back with 30 days from there.

But you can't get a SETV. From that island

I need an advice please, I have been holding a guardian visa for 5 yrs and it was expired last Feb.23! My daughter's College doesn't want to give a supporting letter for me to follow her visa!

So I went for visa run in Cambodia last Feb.23 and cancelled my guardian visa, changed in to tourist visa. I've got 30days valid visa til March 24.

My question is, how long can I do the visa run and would this be a problem in the future if I keep exiting the country?

I am living here with my daughter.

TIA

Border run, extend, visa run to Laos, extend, border run, extend, visa run to KL, extend, visa run to Myanmar, extend.....well over a year.....then on the 1st of Jan 2019 you get another 2 border runs again....but they will question you eventually....always have 20k baht on your person just in case they ask and check specific Thai consulates before you fly there....they all can be different....
Jovelyn *******
Thank you very much for all the the advice now, I understand.x
Tod *********
@L**
, you're not the first person to live here on back-2-back visa exempt or 60 day tourist visa entries. At some point you're gonna get questioned but it's gonna take a fair few tourist visas and visa exempt entries before that happens.
Tod *********
Lyn Gunsa okay let's get some terms down so you don't mess up

A border-bounce is when you go to the border, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and stamp right back into thailand to get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp

A visa run is where you go to a thai consulate in another country and BUY a visa.
Michael *********
Nobody can guarantee anything, entry to Thailand is based upon the discretion of the individual Immigration Officer.
Jovelyn *******
@Tod ********
, so it's okay for me to do the boarder run twice in a year from different Countries, right? And immigration won't stop me entering again once I'm out the country for visa run! Or is it too risky?
Tod *********
@L**
, no you can get a tourist visa or do visa exempt entries because your previous visa doesn't matter at all.

What they are saying is if you do border-bounces (what you when you went to the border, stamped out of the country, stamped in and out of another country and stamped back into thailand) you get a 30 day visa exempt entry and you can only do that by land TWO times in a year.
Robert *******
Memories in passports does not give you privileges or other benefits. You have to visit a Thai Embassy or Consulate apply for a visa day 1 and pick up next working day.
Robert *******
Lyn Gunsa YES, only a Thai Embassy or Consulate sells visa. At the border you get a VISA EXEMPT ENTRY ( you entered Thailand without a Visa) and got 30 days stay. You can extend this once with another 30 days at local Immigration, but you are only allowed to make two of these visa exempt entries by land borders a calendar year.
Jovelyn *******
Because I've been holding a guardian visa?
Jovelyn *******
@Robert ******
sorry i'm a bit confused! I had cancelled my guardian to a tourist visa last feb.23 I did visa run to Cambodia and immigration gave me a 30 days valid til March 24.

Correct me if I'm wrong, does it mean that I'm only allow to have a tourist visa from Thai embassy! Not from boarder run?
Robert *******
Sorry Lyn, but do you have a 30 day Visa Exempt Entry (entry without VISA) What Robert means is that you have to visit a Thai Embassy/Consulate and buy a Tourist Visa. Just doing a border run using the Visa Exempt Entry can only be done twice a calendar year.
Jovelyn *******
Thank you Robert A. Piccus
Terary **********
If you are in your home country - you will want to begin with a multiple entry tourist visa (METV). These are only available in your home country. Otherwise you can get an Single Entry Tourist Visa (SETV) from any Thai Consulate. Each Visa entry (each time you come into Thailand), you can stay 60 + 30 days (60 days, + 30 day extension). You will need to leave then come back. The 60+30 day is the same for SETV or METV.

There is not a huge difference between METV/SETV except SETV requires you get a new every 90 days. Both require you to leave every 90 days.

I have been on SETV for about the past year. I have heard others doing it for several years.
Terary **********
Most people go to one of the neighbouring countries, Lao/Malaysia and get new SETV. I choose to take the opportunity to see different places and get new Visa (Vietnam, Myanmar, etc). There is another option to do with a visa exemption. I haven't done one yet, so I don't know too much.. However, it's my understanding you go to some near by border, cross, grab lunch and come back without visa. This will get you (UK passport) 30+30 days.

A word of warning. Different people will give different advice and relate different experiences. There are different rules for people with different passports (some only get 15 days when doing border bounce), be aware of who is telling you what.
