What are the benefits of applying for a 60-day tourist visa versus visa exempt with an extension in Thailand?

Looking at applying for an METV. If they don't approve the 6 month and downgrade me to a 60 day visa, is there any benefit compared to a visa exempt with an extension?

Also, I am about 20 days out, is this too late to apply?

TLDR : Answer Summary
In comparing the 60-day tourist visa to a visa exempt status with an extension, the tourist visa provides several advantages: it allows for a total stay of 90 days with an extension, offers a more favorable immigration history, and does not require proof of onward travel for entry. Applying for a tourist visa close to the departure date may still be feasible, depending on the embassy's processing times.

Less border crossings ( = cheaper), with 60 days tourist visa + 30 days extension.

And look better in your immigration history.

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

Should be possibel to get Touristvisa in 20 days, since most embassies, proces according to departuredate.

But take a look at the embassy website, and see what they recommend

There are various benefits of having a 60 day visa. An obvious one is the possibility to extend it to 90, which won't work with exemption and requires a border run. An equally obvious benefit is not having to extend if 60 days is the target. A less obvious advantage is that you do not require proof of onward travel within 30 on exemption, which your airline may pre-check and refuse boarding for. Another less obvious one is that a visa *should* qualify for entry (immigrations will have a last say but the embassy is supposed to decide if your travel history and visa application docs qualify for entering Thailand). On exemption, the check is done by immigrations, so if you have extended travel history to Thailand on tourist visas or exemptions, using an Embassy to get a tourist visa is safer.

In other cases there's even a fifth advantage: the cost. But in your case that doesn't apply if you get your SETV from being downgraded from the METV.

Arrive visa exempt you then need to go to an immigration office near where your staying line up and hopefully you have everything they want to see then pay 1900baht can only extend once giving 60days total. Advantage of visa as Brandon said is you get 60 days on arrival and can extend another 30 if wanted. Tr60 better option don't need to go to immigration to get 60days.

If you haven't got all the documentation ready to submit then you would be cutting it close to your departure date, but that would depend on your embassy's current processing time and whether they use the eVisa system as that may save you a few days.

Any idea what happens if they do not complete the pre-paid application by departure date? Yes I am on the e-visa sight

At least with e-visa you will still have your passport to enter visa-exempt (assume your country has visa exempt status). When I did mine last year I needed to post my passport with my application. With visa exempt you will need to ensure your airline will let you board without the visa or without an onward ticket for the 30 days that visa exempt provides. I have heard that some people did receive their visa late when already in Thailand. To active it you would just exit and re-enter the country with a printout of the visa PDF.

Hmm, OK. Super exhausting for sure. I just booked a onward ticket for just under the 60 days to apply this visa. Do you think the airlines would have an issue with an onward over 30 days if I end up going with visa exempt? US passport. THX?

The London Embassy processing time is 3-5 days so you have plenty of time to supply missing documentation (if any)

it's not difficult. It's easier to apply for the evisa than to have to interupt your holiday to go to immigration for an extension, and it's sliggtly more expensive. You may also need a TM30 for your extension which is more paperwork, more time and possibly more money

To qualify for multiple entry tourist visa you need to show a ticket to Thailand from the country you are applying for (the country of your passport), a ticket out of Thailand within 60 days, and then another ticket into Thailand. If you don't show this then you have not given justification for multiple entries and they might only issue a single entry.

they not issue another visa they issue what you apply for or they deny and you don't need to show any flight out or in again into Thailand for the MET

Thanks, yes I booked these onward and return flights today, as well as about 58 days hotels in Thailand. Uploaded them earlier

then if you leave and your visa hasn't been issued, you can receive it after you arrive in Thailand. You can't activate it in the country but it's still valid for when you leave and return.

Ah OK, I never heard that, Wife is in one ear telling me to just arrive visa exempt. I am planning to apply a long term visa, but I would like to have more time to arrive and prepare for the next visa process.

call them and find out.

Visa exempt is 30 days, with a 30 day extension possible. A tourist visa is 60 days, with a 30 day extension possible. There's a 30 day difference.

Also tourist visa entry is looked on slightly more favorably if you have been in Thailand for an extended period of time without a long term visa.

Thanks Brandon. My Thai wife and kid are on the flight itinerary with me, any idea if that might negatively affect my application? Or is that common?

I don't see how it would make any difference
