TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around finding companies that provide refundable flight tickets to meet the proof of departure requirement. Various suggestions include renting onward travel tickets for a nominal fee, utilizing fully cancellable tickets within a specific time frame from airlines like Air Canada, and using travel websites that offer refundable options. Additionally, some commenters suggest getting a low-cost ticket to a nearby country to satisfy airline requirements and visa conditions.

Get a cheap burner ticket to a nearby country, that will satiate the Airline at check-in and the visa process. Should be $40 from BKK to Hanoi.

Many/most of the major Travel Websites also allow cancellable/refundable 24hrs: Kayak, Expedia, Travelocity, etc. BUT, of course, this won't work if applying for a Visa, TR or otherwise, as application/approval process would take far longer. As for use with Visa Exempt, time will also be tight -- must book shortly before departure, and hope you arrive without major delays, and can cancel after pass thru Thai Immigration.

All air Canada tickets are fully cancellable/refundable within 24 hrs of purchase. Many US airlines same.

At the risk of setting off the “experts”, who is asking for proof of departure? Thai immigration will definitely not, but your airline might. “Normally” you can talk the airline round if you tell them what you’re doing and they believe you.

of you are applying for a visa then I understand totally. If you don’t have an onward travel ticket then I would recommend getting a cheap Air Asia or similar flight ticket.

At a risk of “being set off” I’d like to point out that many many people are denied boarding by their airline because they don’t have a onward ticket. Many aren’t. It’s not something we can tell you for sure will happen one way or the other. It may or may not.

well done for maintaining composure and not erupting into a full on manufactured meltdown.

I have never actually heard of someone being refused boarding, not to say it’s never happened. I have been challenged many times by the airlines, never ever by Thai immigration, and I have always succeeded in explaining to the check in staff that I am not going to overstay.

Rarely would immigration question you unless you have a history of back to back exempt or tourist visa entries and they’re looking for a reason to deny you. Your airline quite possibly will. If you have a visa for 60 days or exempt for 45 they may well ask for proof of exit within those days. You may never have been asked but plenty of others have.

I can only comment on my own extensive experience of living in and entering Thailand and anecdotal stories from fellow travellers.

I can only comment on posts I see here and other visa forums. I personally have been asked by Air NZ for proof. I know lots of others have been asked too. Many many others aren’t and can’t see what the issue is because in X number of years visiting Thailand they never have been. Just to say it could happen. You might not experience it but plenty of others do.

If you're only looking for proof of a flight, Google "onward travel ticket" and you can basically rent a valid ticket for about $10-$15 and they'll cancel it so you don't have to worry about it.
