Hi to all, i have used this site 3-4 times in the last yr and wonderful admin and others helping with advice- my O-A visa expires April 17, and i don't think i have enough money to renew it, but a friend thought i could just go across any border, get 45 days, then go to Immigration and get a 90 day added on, then decide what to do. if that is true i will do that, any other options for me, please advise. Thanks in advance, appreciate it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about options for renewing their O-A visa, which is set to expire on April 17. They express concern about insufficient funds for renewal. Comments provide guidance: if within the validity of the original O-A visa, the user can purchase another year of health insurance, exit Thailand, and re-enter for a new O-A stamp. If the visa has expired, they can leave and return for 45 days, extendable for 30 days. To obtain a new 90-day Non-O visa, the user must have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account.

All you need to do is buy another year of insurance, leave the country and return (before April 17) and get a second year of the NON OA. No need to move money for another year.

Here's my 2nd year stamp. Showed insurance and got year number 2. I am about to have to leave the country to cancel so I can start a new visa. But OA gets two years with insurance but no money transfer.

thank you, yes you are the 2nd person to say that, admin/moderator said same thing, that is great news , thanks for your help

You don't need proof of funds for a NON OA. Just proof of insurance. You don't have to go to immigration until your 90 day report.
Terry *******
You are in the same boat as me. You will need to leave the country before your expiration date and return to cancel the NON OA. You will get the visa exemption 45 days plus you can add an additional 30 days (1900 baht). Then you will need the 800,000 baht in the bank (for the 2 months before you apply). The only other option is paying an agent (approximatly 30,000 baht) to take care of it for you.

Hi again Terry, i re-read Brandon's reply again, sorry but i didn't express myself fully, i got the -O-A visa in Canada Sept 2020 before i flew here that month, but i only got 7 months insurance as Thai Embassy in Canada said i could, and get the rest of the year insurance in Thailand, because i had to pay for flights, Q hotel for 2 weeks in Bangkok, etc, so i had to renew my visa by May 2021, which i did i got a yr insurance, had to get proof of my 800,000 baht in the bank , stamped by Canadian Embassy in Bangkok, to bring me to April 17, 23, so in 2 months,, so basically it would seem like a got an extension already- yes or no, Brandon if you see, said if it is an extention then this will not work, any thoughts, thanks very much, appreciate it

thanks but stupid question, i buy the insurance, then cross the border and come back, when at the border do they stamp it for a yr or do i have to go to Immigration here in Korat, if i go there they will ask for proof of funds which i can't do- thanks for your time

Are you still within the validity dates of the original OA visa you received from your embassy?

If you are, you can purchase another year of insurance, then exit and re-enter Thailand before the end date on your visa, and you'll get stamped into Thailand for another year.

If your visa has already expired, then you can leave and re-enter for 45 days which you can extend for an additional 30 days.

To get a new 90-day non-O visa you would have to show 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account in your name only, so if you can't do that then the 90 day visa is not an option for you.

Hi, just re-read your message, i want to clarify more- i got my O-A original from Canada in Sept 21 but i only got 6-7 months insurance instead of the whole year, because had to pay covid hotel, etc- Thai Consulate in Canada said i could pay the rest later, well, in April '22 came as it was stamped good until May 1, so then went to Korat Immigration and had to get proof of 800,000 from bank, stamped by Canadian Consulate in Bangkok, and that gave me another year, so April 17 this yr-are you still saying i can just cross the border and come back and i get another yr , do they stamp it at the border so no need to go to Immigration until 90 day report?? seems strange a person does not need proof of funds every yr but if so very happy with that, thanks so much, appreciate it more than you know

@Darcy ******
it sounds like you're on an extension and not the visa you got from the embassy then. If that's the case then you can't just leave and re-enter getting a new year. You'd have to follow the same procedure you did last April.

thank you for that important info, as yes, i guess that meant i was on an extension- glad i added that and glad you mentioned "original visa' so that got me thinking- my wife is very sick, all i want is to get as many months as possible to stay here without having to show my proof of funds, which is not even close to the 800,000 baht- thanks

bless you for the info-yes my O-A expires April 17 2023 so in a few months,,i don't want another year of this visa, as not enough in the bank, my wife is very sick so have been spending lots of money on her health, so looking ahead to my options-i was hoping to leave the country say April 15 , get 45 days, then extend it as much as possible , if possible,, but i am confused with part of your answer, are you saying if i get my AXA insurance renewed for another year, then cross the border and come back then i am ok- i would still need proof of 800,000 baht in the bank, which i don't have
Brandon ************
@Darcy ******
you don't need money in the bank to get another year from your visa. With the OA visa you get stamped in for a year every time you enter Thailand as long as you have a year of insurance. So just before your visa expires in April leave Thailand and enter again. If you have another year of health insurance to show then you'll be stamped in for another year. No money required. Most people use the OA visa to get 2 years in Thailand.

However if you leave and return after your visa expires you can't do this and will only get 30 days and if you want a 90 day visa you'll have to show 800,000 to get a new non-O visa. There's no reason to do any of this if you just leave and re-enter with new insurance before your visa expires.

Also the visa exempt goes back to 30 days on April 1st. So you don't get 45 days.
