What are my options for extending my stay in Thailand after my initial 90 days on a tourist visa?

I received my 60 day visa and will apply for a 30 day visa extension which should make it possible to stay for 90 days.

What are my options after that? I would love to stay 6 months (tourist visa). Should I leave the country in between or can I apply for another visa or extension whilst there? I Hope you can advise me. Thanks very much.

TLDR : Answer Summary
After receiving a 60-day visa in Thailand and planning to apply for a 30-day extension to allow a total stay of 90 days, it is important to understand the options available for extending your stay further. The consensus is that there is no way to obtain a 6-month tourist visa from within Thailand. You can apply for a 30-day regular extension followed by an attempt for a 60-day COVID extension, both of which must be done before your initial visa expiration. Alternatively, you may consider applying for an Educational (ED) visa by enrolling in a Thai language school or leaving Thailand to obtain another tourist visa from a nearby country.

There is no 6 month tourist visa you can get inside thailand. That needed to be done before you showed up here.

You can get the one 30 day regular extension and then before the 25 of Jan you can go and try to see if they will give you a 60 day covid extension.

Other possibilities are ED visas (talk to thai language schools etc) or leaving getting another tourist visa and coming back

Thanks a lot, and yes I guess these uncertain times ask to be flexible in many ways, also with regards to a visa 🤷

Ok thanks. So you for a METV I can directly apply for 6 months (180 days) visa? And I need to cross the border every 60 days? I'm wondering which option will be smoothest in my case since I wish to stay 6 months and preferably don't stay in neighboring countries if not necessary, so only border runs if possible, to extend my stay.

I think you're going to have some problems bouncing out and back with this covid thing going on, BUT

other than that, just come in on a single entry tourist visa, get 60 days, take the 30 day extension and then see how things are then to go to another country and get a new tourist visa

But do I also understand it correctly that with this 60 days visa, I can extend with 30 days in Thailand. Then I can do a border run to laos, Cambodia, Myanmar or Malaysia and apply for a 60 day tourist visa again (without needing to stay there a certain amount of days?) and extend it again with 30 days in Thailand? And how often is it possible to apply for a 60 tourist visa in a neighboring country?

currently most land borders are closed or restricted. Neighbouring countries are opening up a little but the 'almost same day' border bounces are still not possible I think ...paperwork for entry and exit and re entry to thailand requirements blabla

pre-covid shit show that get a tourist visa, get a 30 day extension, go to another country get a new tourist visa, come back repeat etc was the way that many people "lived in thailand" and they did it for years BUT who knows how it will really work during the shit show we have going on

, it's possible until they say you have too many tourist visas and can;t get another one

Hi Tod, thanks very much for your replays and helping me out. So what I understand from you is that I CAN apply for a METV for 6 months and do a border run every 60 days. This is what I asked when I called the embassy to check how to apply for this online and I did not get a clear answer and only suggestion was a 60 days visa. I would rather do a border run every 60 days and having my visa sorted for 6 months than still need to arrange applications whilst there. My experience when I had a 3x 60 days visa 10 years ago is that the border runs were very easy going, just getting a stamp and ready to go back again. I don't know if this process changed because of corona.

there is no double and triple entry tourist visas anymore

Those were discontinued when they came out with the 6 month METV program

if you're applying at a thai consulate that uses the eVisa program (UK, US and others) its this choice. Once you pick multiple entries it's automatically the METV

Hi Tod, thanks for your replay. I've checked the embassy website and could only find a 2 months tourist visa or a 3 months special tourist visa. This is why I did not apply for a longer visa, cause I assumed that it is not possible. I know I've had a 3x 2 months tourist visa before. But when I called the embassy to check they could not tell me it's possible. Now I doubt whether I could have applied for a multiple entry 6 months visa? I will fly on 30 december, so if it's possible to get a 6 months visa I'd like to change it asap. And the option of leaving and coming back, how long should I leave the country? And what kind of visas (how many days) can I apply for if I'd leave the country to a neighboring country?

All you're going to be able to get IF you go to a thai consulate in a nearby country that's open is a single entry tourist visa that will give you 60 days of stay and which you can extend for 30 more inside the country.

The 6 month METV Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (which you can only get in your country) is available again (especially for the countries that have the eVisa program) That visa is valid for 6 months and allows unlimited entries during that time with each entry getting you stamped in for 60 days. When that 60 days runs out you exit/re-enter the country and get another 60 day stamp.

Unfortunately it's the getting out and back in that takes some doing now but it can be done and that's why they started selling those visas again.

okay let's sort out a tourist visa. A single entry tourist visa is valid for 90 days from the day they issue it <- that means you have that long to ENTER thailand and when you do you'll get stamped in for 60 days like everyone on a regular tourist visa gets. You can extend that ONCE for 30 more days at the immigration office
