Anybody who has applied for DTV extension in Samui, do you have any advice to get it right the first time? I’m pregnant and due to give birth around when my DTV is due to expire so any help with the extension would be appreciated.

Note: I know I can bounce in and out but I’d rather not do the 16+ hour day trip to Malaysia 8 months pregnant.

Thank you in advance
Answer summary
A user seeking advice on extending their DTV visa in Samui while pregnant received several responses. Key points included the importance of clear documentation, including updated bank statements and work contracts. Users emphasized that the extension process is straightforward and should not be complicated if all required documents are presented. Some highlighted the potential difficulties of flying due to pregnancy and reiterated the importance of planning ahead to avoid last-minute issues. A recommendation was made to consider hiring a legal professional for assistance.

The process will require the proof of funds again.

All current documentation.

All work papers.

If you are on soft power they will want to see ongoing activity, not a completed program.

It essentially requalifying.

Poor planning a border bounce is appropriate.

8 months....it is your fault you don't plan your life in advance when you pregnant 4-6month.the plan include check renew visa policy and fly

You should not have waited until so close to birth, but have made a trip out of Thailand earlier, than waiting so close the the date when the visa expires.

You can goto ranong, its a few hours each way, you can go on a visa run trip or drive yourself, nice scenery along the way

Treat extension timing as a paperwork buffer problem, not a last-week scramble. If Samui immigration is handling your category cleanly, start early enough that a request for extra docs doesn’t collide with your expiry date. Pregnancy changes the travel fallback more than the visa logic: a land run only helps if you can actually do it comfortably. Confirm the local extension checklist (appointment, medical/insurance if asked, proof of funds path) before you lock a Malaysia plan as Plan B.

As someone who extended his DTV, it's NOT hard!!! It's convenient and fast (took me three hours including transportation and waiting time).

There's no magical trick, no specific format, no secret presentation.

Give them the documents on the list and you are going to be approved.

Edit: as you are 8-months pregnant, flying may be too much on your body. It will be exhausting and medically risky. Just extend.

Airlines might not let you fly after being 32 weeks pregnant. Why did you wait till now to solve your immigration issue?

Yes I’ve heard they make it difficult but not impossible so that’s why I was asking for advice on the extension process not advice on my whole situation.

Okay bear with me as this is long winded 🤣😂😂but considering your predicament you should maybe listen to some advice 🤷‍♂️

Some airlines will still let you fly at 8 months (roughly 32–35 weeks), but don’t expect it to be straightforward.

You’ll almost certainly face conditions and restrictions, and most will require a “fit to fly” letter from your doctor. Flight duration and timing will also play a big part. The sensible move would have been to research airlines, routes and their exact pregnancy policies before things got this late.

Your DTV is due to expire? You obviously mean the 6-month (180-day) allowable stay period is up for renewal. As it’s a 5-year multiple-entry visa it should only require a border run to reset the clock — correct? Or am I missing something?

Anyway, if flying isn’t an option at this stage…

Another alternative is Samui to Ranong. Look for a travel agent who specialises in visa runs to Ranong. If that feels like too much effort, take the ferry to Surat Thani (or Donsak) and then a bus or pre-arranged driver the rest of the way — roughly 7–8 hours depending on connections.

Once again, a bit of online research would clear this up quickly.

Ranong border-crossing process (as it currently stands):

Go to Thai Immigration at Saphan Pla pier, get your exit stamp, then take a long-tail boat (20–45 minutes, around 200–300 THB) across to Kawthaung, Myanmar.

At Myanmar Immigration you can usually obtain a short-stay border pass/permit for a fee (commonly ~500 THB or US$10 in clean notes) without needing a full Myanmar visa if you’re only doing a same-day run. Passport copies are often required.

After a short time on the Myanmar side you reverse the process, re-enter Thailand, and receive a fresh 180-day stamp under your DTV. The border is generally open during daylight hours (roughly 7 am–5 pm).

Rules and fees can change, so again do your research and confirm the latest details before you go.

Note that this involves boats, walking between offices, and potential queues — not exactly ideal when heavily pregnant.🤨

Let’s hope the planning for the actual newborn’s delivery is a little more organised than this last-minute scramble…. From the sidelines, the lack of obvious foresight and leaving major logistics this late while heavily pregnant doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Maybe time to pull the finger out — you’ll be a parent in a few months.🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Anyway, best of luck sorting this mess and for the delivery.😉👍

Anonymous participant 474 I am not here to make great posts, iam just giving advice and after two decades of living abroad and listening to advice from people who have lived here successfully for years in South East Asia I’ve had minimal drama. I’ve learned and seen that most of the messes people land in are self-inflicted and completely avoidable with listening to good advice, being responsible and practicing common sense 🤷‍♂️

Moving to another country doesn’t magically erase those things. Too many expect Internet forums and groups to fix it for them. I’d rather just handle my own problems and mistakes than outsource them to strangers on a forum. 😉👍 The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing 🤷‍♂️

And then to not expect condescending although constructive criticism? 😂 Sometimes the only way the lesson sticks is when it’s delivered not covered in cotton wool (even if it comes across as condescending).

it’s my 18th year in Thailand, two kids born and raised here (both I and my wife are farang), so I know a thing or two about the subject. I could have written a post of similar substance, bar patronizing parts.

Knowledge and experience is one thing, being a p-k (by making assumptions about anonymous posters) is something entirely unrelated. Not sugar-coating it, in hopes that you’ll take notice 🤣

Unfortunately extending is basically the same as re-applying. You cannot even use old documents you will need updated bank statements, updated wor contracts , etc. Then on top of that any extras each immigration office may want, such as the photo's and the map on this list here. If you really have to just provide as much as you can.

Why you waited so long then? Well prepared and organized 😅

Just fly out from Samui airport to BKK and another country. Return back within a few days and you are good 👍

Other way just follow the instructions handed to you. No agent magically produced these documents…you will need to get moving.

OP
Inglorious Basterd I’m in a high risk pregnancy so of course I’m going to choose an in country extension over a 16 hour border bounce or flight to Singapore and back. Also extending is cheaper!

I was only looking for advice for applying for an extension in Samui to save myself much needed energy with any back and forth they may have. Even without any advice here in this group, I’m sure ill work it out as I still am working online and have the money in my bank account (which seems to be most people’s issues).

Also it’s not last minute, you cannot apply for extension until 45 days before it’s due to expire so that’s this week for me…

Last resort I’ll use Thai visa centre or maybe medical extension with a letter from the hospital. I’m not a complete idiot 😅

Not sure about the regulations of flying pregnant, but that’s not my problem either. Seems like she will need to do it all within Thailand then

If flying is no option for you (USM to SIN), then you just need to show all documents and updated proofs. What kind of DTV do you have?

tbh any back and forth should be much easier than a flight or border bounce so I’ll just go and see
