Should I pay an additional THB2000 for my Thai immigration home visit?

Question. I’ve paid THB2000 when applying for my non-o visa Dependants Visa . I go back to immigration in 2 weeks after it’s processed.

We were told at the time , immigration will do a house visit to confirm my address with my Thai wife. They are coming this morning before 12noon. My wife took the call and was told another THB2000 is due when they visit. I cannot see anywhere to say this is true. Can anyone confirm if I should be paying another THB2000 for this immigration home visit? It might be they have got confused with the original 2000 I paid when submitting application with paperwork. Help please

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post describes a situation where the author has been informed that an additional THB 2000 is required for an immigration home visit after initially paying the same amount for a dependent visa application. Community responses indicate that while such requests may occur, they are typically not officially mandated, and the fees may be informal 'gifts' for travel expenses. Contributors suggest asking for a receipt, demanding payment at the immigration office instead, or simply paying to avoid complications with visa processing. The consensus acknowledges a risk of normalizing extortion within the immigration process but balances it against the potential impact on one’s visa status.

I haven't got any cash with me. My debit card has been misplaced in the house somewhere. I can go to the bank and drop the money off at the immigration office after I've been to the bank for the cash.

Do you have a case reference number that I can give to an immigration officer regarding the 2,000bt that I will pay for the visit ?
Mark ********
Just hand over 1000 baht and say that’s all you have. A bit of compromise and they’ll still be happy. 😃 Then you can mention that you’ll bring the other 1000 baht to the immigration office the next day. Would be interesting to hear what their response would be.

Ask for a receipt and see what they say then.
Gianpaolo ******
It's obvious they want to extort money from you. By law, you're not required to pay! But you should pay because they're the ones who decide whether to grant you a visa! There's a rule of life that says when you're the hammer, strike; when you're the anvil, stay put. In this case, you're the anvil and they're the hammer.

Demand a receive ,you will not get one!!!

You should not give them anything. You've set a precedent for yourself now. Also you should have given them your own phone number

Update: it was the immigration police that came . I paid the THB 2000 in cash with no receipt given. It was very apparent not to question and for an easy visa process, we had to get 3 independent neighbours to verify I’ve been living here, I just paid and they went away happy with all paperwork signed and photos taken .

it happens in my wife’s home country too. “Coffee money”. Each time I travel there, need to register my passport with the police office in that district. It’s the same police officer who will help us when in need.

Don't be a moralist. I'd really like to see what you would have done in his place. You would have risked having to leave the place you live and your wife for 2,000 baht of shit! Instead, you would certainly have paid too! Unfortunately, there is no law that protects you and automatically guarantees you a visa if you produce certain documents! Each visa issuance is at the discretion of the immigration officer! So even if it's unfair, it's better to pay.
Radost **************************
@Gianpaolo *****
of course when your paperwork is ok you get extension granted. Immigration officer can't deny s application. What false information do you post.
Spencer *******
@Paul ******
would you fight against them I certainly would not if less than £50 is going to make such a difference fair enough but it's a small price to pay when others are making decisions about you.
Gianpaolo ******
@Spencer ******
Of course you have to pay for 2000 baht of shit, you risk having to separate from your wife! I'd really like to see what he would have done! I'm telling you, either he paid and kept quiet or he didn't pay, they would have denied him the visa and he would have started crying like a little girl, he would have gone to a lawyer, he would have spent more than 100,000 baht and it wouldn't have solved anything! So even if it's unfair, screw you and pay.
Radost **************************
@Gianpaolo *****
they can't deny the visa if your paperwork is ok. Especially if you have a Thai partner. No chance to deny. And an immigration officer would not risk to explain with he deny against the law an extension if all papers are ok.

All the people who pay make it harder for the other ones.

Gianpaolo ******
@Radost *************************
This is bullshit! There's no automatic process! Issuing a visa or extending it is always at the discretion of the officer you submit your application to! This applies not only to Thailand but to any country in the world. In fact, the Schengen visa regulations state that submitting correct documentation does not automatically grant you a visa, and even possessing a valid visa doesn't automatically grant you entry into the country; it's always at the discretion of the border officer! You, who boast of knowing everything, what risks would the immigration officer risk if he denied you a visa?
Spencer *******
@Gianpaolo *****
I am in full agreement with you
Paul *******
@Spencer ******
I would refuse. I am not willing to support corruption. I would offer to pay if they were willing to have their pjoto taken with the money being handed over. I would than take the phot to the Chief Immigration Officer and expose the cooupt policemen.

let me guess your on a marriage or retirement visa, I will assume you don't need to work and further assume whatever visa you have may preclude any type of work. I bet if that's the case that mowing the lawn, cooking let's dare I say it a bit of cleaning all perfectly normal in any developed society. However if you do not hold a work permit all against the Law here as all jobs that can be done by a Thai. You attacked Tim frankly for making a decision that suited his needs and circumstances. In a perfect world all the immigration all the banks would all follow the rules bit that simply is not what happens. I recently went to over 20 banks all refused ( I had previously checked with Krungthai ) I produced all they asked for to be given a supplementary list. I managed eventually to open an account with exactly the same documents I had used at the preceeding 20. I did not use an agent but had my last attempt been unsuccessful it would have been the only way forward. We all can only react and act with the ever changing rules interpretations that happen here. I wish I was as perfect as you Sir but I am a simple man living a simple life with the Woman I love and frankly if someone says jump I say how high if it gets me what I want.
Rick *********
@Spencer ******
Your analogy about working in Thailand needs clarification you can mow the lawn, clean, and cook when working in the confines of your own house. It is only when doing work, paid or unpaid outside this area that you will find yourself in trouble.

Never happened when we got visited.. although i was aware of the possibility from forum discussions.. but usually they seek a few hundred baht to cover 'travel expenses' etc.. but it's a ruse and imo should not be encouraged by foreigners caving in to such extortion.. if you have followed the rules to get your visa you should have nothing to fear.. and you should not tolerate it.. if you pay up they will be sure to visit you at every renewal to collect more money.. the best tactic is to say you will gladly visit the office to make payment at the counter the next day.. and you'll probably find they offer to waive it as a big favour to you 😉

Offer to pay by card . That will mess it up for them

I’m reading all the replies. You have all answered my question in as much as you have heard of the fee! We have spoken to the immigration office and it’s confirmed they have passed over this home visit to local police to do the check.

I guess I will pay to avoid any future issues with visas. My wife being Thai says I should just pay and not question the police. Thanks for your help everyone, it’s not worth me making a big thing about this although I will ask for a receipt for my records

@Max ************
we all know it's cash under the table, like paying them to fill out your visa forms or paying them to do your 90 day report and send it in the post, but nothing is free in Thailand.
Paul *******
Tell the Immigration Police that you wil pay it at the Immigration Office and request a receipt. The request will dissapear.
Brandon ************
Common "request" from immigration officers at some offices when they do a home visit. They say it's for gas money or something etc. You're not required to pay it. Decide if you want to raise a stink about it or not.

Normally easiest way to bypass these things is to demand a receipt for it and/or say you will only pay by scan/bank transfer so there's a paper trail. They'll usually back down.

I've often heard husbands wanting to refuse but when they tell their Thai wife, the wife just wants to pay it and not cause any problems.

keep in mind that their report determines whether your extension is approved, or not, when you make your decision on what to do.
Brandon ************
@Tim *******
it's really a personal decision. You can fight it knowing that these are the people making the decision if you can stay in Thailand or not or you can give in and hand over the money with a shrug and a sigh. I've never heard of anyone encountering actual trouble by trying to fight it though.
