As Steve said just enter the dates and flights your thinking of booking get visa then book. They don't ask for actual proof you booked the flights

I read in the fine print of my AXA insurance they'll cover the cost of flight if visa is denied. I dont know if they actually will but it does say they will.

I bought onward travel. Some airlines allow you to upgrade and give you free fligh-changes. Also you can buy pretty cheap onward travel to Singapore or Cambodia

You dont need to book the flight for the visa. Just put the flight details you intend to take

It asks for flight details just put a flight number from the date you want to fly.

Google will help get the flight number.

If you buy a flight ticket which you can change the departure date free of charge you should be ok

As they say in Thailand, up to you. I wouldn't take the chance though.
