Please A question: Is there an upper age limit for a DTVvisa? For example, can a 61-year-old man obtain a DTV visa?
Answer summary
There is no upper age limit for obtaining a DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) in Thailand. Individuals, including a 61-year-old man, can successfully acquire this visa as long as they meet the essential criteria concerning remote work or 'soft power' activities. The focus for the DTV visa lies on financial stability, proof of work, and personal health, not on age. Many older people, including those in their 60s and 70s, have successfully transitioned to a DTV visa from other visa types, such as the Non-OA retirement visa.

Definitely, I just got one - medical (dental). Muay Thai at 61 seems a little dodgy to me though - if I tried it I would probably need dental anyway.

dtv soft power/medical at 70yo. why do most folks focus on dtv digital nomad? there are options… qualification is easy: who doesnt have some nonacute medical issue needing some regular attention past 60yo? i dont want to hassle with thai banks. i dont drive in thailand. i dont want to waste my money on an expensive, figurehead, thai medical policy when mine is portable. i have no need to permanently cut my ties to my homeland. i can travel as i please. i have no need to work.

Just some simple nonacute medical issues doe not always qualify for DTV.

Luckily most do not need a 5 year continuous treatment.

Most will focus on digotal nomad because that does not cost extra.

5 years softpower or medical treatment will cost significantly.

Many retired Europeans who come to Thailand to spend several months, typically three to six, during the colder part of the year, particularly in Hua Hin, have a DTV visa under the Soft Power category.

I perfectly understand leaving Europe in the winter and go to Thailand, I do it myself too.

I have DTV because I still work and on retirement or other visa except LTR work from Thailand working has no legal base, and with this government doing things in Thailand without legal base does not look very comfortable.

Without working I think the retirement visa is a much cheaper option than DTV with softpower activity, unless you want to participate in that activity anyway.

No upper age limit for DTV visa, a 61 year old man can get it fine. Rules focus on money, work or activity, and health, not age. Many older remote workers and Muay Thai learners get DTV past sixty.

You still need to show bank balance around five hundred thousand baht, proof of freelance work or business, and insurance if asked. Age does not block, but make sure health insurance covers you well and bank proof is clear and recent.

You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.

Wouldn’t choose a turistvisa as DTV, for a longterm stay Thailand, but go for retirement with the much better rights and benefits a genuine longterm visa give.

you might still need the income 😊

You can't work and have an income on a retirement visa and if you are not yet a pensioner.....

Currently there is no restriction on income from work on retirement visa.

The only thing is officialy you are not allowed to work while you are in Thailand, also not a remote job.

It is only age that is counting and on LTR WP your incom from work does not count for the visa requirements, for the requirements only passive income is counted.

you don't need a bank account in Thailand when you're getting a steady salary every month in your own country bank account

As long as you have a remote job and do not live permanently in Thailand DTV is just fine, that was also my decision, when I stop working I will choose a different visa, most likely LTR WP.

Disadvantages of a DTV are you have to leave every 180 days, you cannot get a permanent drivers license, you cannot have a bank account and so there might be some more.

When you stop working and really retire DTV does not make any sense anyway.

On touristvisa’s like DTV you can’t get a Thai Bankaccount.

On real long term visa’s you can.

ok I still haven't understood why a longterm visa is a better choice than a 5 year multiple entry DTV when you are still in your working years and can do the work remotely .

If you have the 5 year DTV, you can wait those 5 year and then go on a no work retirement visa.....

I just don't see the upsides at all by choosing a retirement visa in the situationt hread starter is describing ?

For a remote job they normally would not enforce this strictly, but that might indeed be a reason to apply for DTV workcation or LTR work from Thailand if your employer qualifies.

But having a normal job part of the year in your home country and stay in Thailand for another part of the year on a retirement visa also is a possibility.

As
@Henrik ****
says for a LONGTERM stay the retirement visa is much better.

i would consider that as a huge restriction if you are moving to stay in Thailand and are depending on a normal work income - how can you generate money to cover your living expenses if you are not allowed to do any kind of work while you are in Thailand ?

What am I missing here ?

Or are you talking about working remote anyway secretly ?

The age allows for retirement visa.

I don't remember seeing it. As long as you meet the remote work or soft power criteria. In my country it's very normal for people on their 60s to still work.
