TLDR : Answer Summary
The DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) may not be the best option for studying Buddhist philosophy and meditation in Thailand, as it typically requires enrollment in recognized programs outside of meditation centers. Some commenters suggest alternatives such as the Elite visa or Ed (Education) visa. Approval for DTV ultimately depends on showing enrollment in an approved institution that offers related activities. Although the user has significant funds, financial resources alone do not qualify for a DTV visa; proper documentation and institutional sponsorship are also critical.

The funds are more than sufficient, but money alone doesn’t qualify you.

For DTV (Soft Power), you must show enrollment with a recognized Thai institution (school/center) that issues official documents for the activity. Buddhist study/meditation can qualify only if it’s through an approved organization and the consulate accepts it. Approval depends on the embassy, not finances.

If you have that kind of money I would just go for the elite visa. Or if you are 50+ than the retirement visa

Meditation centers don’t meet the criteria to sponsor anyone for DTV. I know someone who had a letter from an Abbott, she was told by the embassy to use another soft power activity. She used the other soft power activity to get a DTV to stay at meditation center.

MCU can sponsor an education visa if you enrol in their dharma university, but not DTV

Can you get a remote contract with your current work? That would qualify you unambiguously and no need to sign up to something you don't want to do just for the visa. The level of ongoing work doesn't have to be anything in particular, you can work as little as you like.

There is also a Non-Immigrant "R" (Religious) visa, if you wanted to actually become a monk, or also "Ed" (Education) for study. If you get the DTV though it is 5 years and you don't need a particular visa to study, so it is an appealing visa. The other visas typically have more involved and frequent renewal procedures while DTV once you get it you are good for 5 years.

What a noble desire! Sadhu! You can always do a soft power and learn thai cooking and join a monestary after you have completed the 6 months. Some of the cooking classes are only once a week. Good luck dear soul! <3

You are an investor and work online trading stocks. Not sure if they still approve that, but mine was back in 2024.

Start with humbleness if you want to learn Buddhism. No need to display your banking status on Facebook.

I actually lived in a Monestary to learn, I could have become a nun, But I dont think I am ready for that yet. You could try a Monestary for 1 month see how you feel before making any decisions.

Just apply for normal DTV then find somewhere to study here independently

I'm not sure about courses on Buddhist principles but you may try to secure through the soft power option (eg Muay Thai or cooking classes). Alternatively, worktation route may be an option, just a bit more paperwork.

I think the question is "checking account", an emergency fund could go in a high yield savings account, money market fund, or short term treasuries. Risk-free and instant access, but earning 3.5-4.2%. 4.2% of 6m is ~250k ($8,000), a lot to just pass up. HYSAs are accepted same as anything else for visa purposes so no reason not to. Maybe he gets decent interest on the current account.

6m ($192k) is probably not "6 months cash" for someone with a total of 68m. It's almost 10% of their investments, which is significant in percentage terms. If someone with under $2m invested is spending $32k/month they are living well beyond their means. Even people with $50-100m spend less than that on average.

No dtv to learn Buddhism. There is a whole separate avenue to pursue doing that, and it involves becoming a monk. This is a good place to start.
