Is the ED visa worth it for long-term residency in Thailand compared to the DTV visa?

Thinking long-term about Thailand (DTV/ED visa route). ED visa seems expensive relative to the actual value if the main goal is just residency + basic Thai learning. Lifestyle is good but I’m questioning whether Thailand is slightly overrated compared to neighbouring countries on cost/value and bureaucracy friction. Curious to hear honest long-term takes—especially from people who stayed vs left.
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around the ED (Educational) visa and DTV (Digital Nomad Thailand Visa) as options for long-term residency in Thailand. Several comments highlight the pros and cons of each visa type. The ED visa is seen as beneficial for language learning and cultural integration, though it's acknowledged that it can be expensive and comes with restrictions on mobility and class attendance. In contrast, the DTV visa offers more flexibility and is deemed cost-effective for long-term residency without the bureaucratic hassle associated with the ED visa. The conversation also mentions the overall quality of life in Thailand compared to neighboring countries, suggesting that Thailand remains a favorable option despite some criticisms.

Going on second year on non o visa don't know yet if I'm going stay for another full year I don't know if I should just tie up my money in Thai bank again for the year. Is it possible to apply for an E visa for this year and take a course like Thaı lessons? Is that possible?

Look at the combination of Thai language study and Thai culture study for the DTV visa.

It's eligible for the DTV visa.

Be sure to enroll for 9 months or more... for this important reason...

Please Note that it's now recommended by many soft power activity course providers to submit at least 9 months or more of your course with your DTV Visa Application. Reason for that is to avoid getting the SETV single entry tourist visa or METV multiple entry tourist visa issued by the Thai Embassy or Consulate instead of the DTV visa applied for.

Reasoning that with the SETV ( 3 months) or METV (6 months) visa you can complete the course you're applying for vs the DTV visa.

Where are you living in Thailand?

What is your passport nation?

ED is not good if you plan to LIVE in Thailand. Of course it's good if you plan to STUDY in Thailand.

With the DTV I'm free to enter, exit and reenter the country anytime I want, without having to pay for it nor needing to get any permission from anybody.

On the other hand, with the ED you CAN'T leave and reenter freely, and you can't skip many clases without permission or Immigration can cancel your visa.

It depends. I can recommend both.

The ED has the added value of learning the language (if you go with a private language school) and i can highly recommend doing that. it helps you in everyday life here. also it is a perfect starting point as a new expat in thailand because you get to know many people that are in the same situation. you can share experiences and knowledge. make friends. i think ED is amazing to start your journey. you can even do multiple years with multiple consecutive visa, no problem at all. yes it is more expensive and depends if you value the things i mentioned.

DTV is amazing because it gives you 5 years without headaches. it is a lot cheaper too. so for just residency and peace of mind and value in this regards it is the best visa.

whatever visa you get, i always recommend learning the language when you plan on staying longterm.

both visa are also easy to get. i dont think thailand has that much bureaucracy coming from the western world.

thailand is not overrated and has amazing value. neighboring countries come with their own problems. worse infrastructure (a lot worse often), security, worse food, worse beaches, worse culture, etc… especially with a western income you can have an amazing life in thailand. huge increase in quality of life and easiness.
