Here's a question for you all. What what country is best? Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia to retire to?
Answer summary
The post discusses the pros and cons of retiring in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, with various community members sharing their experiences and opinions. Many favor Thailand for its healthcare, infrastructure, and retirement visa options, although some criticize it for being increasingly expensive and difficult for expats. Vietnam lacks a retirement visa and requires frequent border runs, while Cambodia is perceived as more welcoming with less complex visa regulations, though its healthcare is considered inferior. Ultimately, individual preferences in lifestyle, budget, and personal circumstances play a significant role in determining which country might be best for retirement.

Thailand presents the most options in terms of locations. It has become a bit more expensive though in all regards. Cambodia presents a cheaper option with generous visa requirements. But I feel that beyond Phnom Penh, there are only a few other places a foreigner would want to live. And note that Chinese interests destroyed Sihanoukville, one of the nicest places in SE Asia; what’s next? As for Vietnam, I only know people who do business there, no retirees.

People go to Thailand mainly for prostitution and drug, and yes scam and human trafficking are renowned too. Pickpocketing is everywhere in Thailand. They love stealing your passport, and you'll have problems with the police afterwards. If you want a peaceful, calm and tranquil life with genuine smile from local people, come to Cambodia.

Vietnam has no retirement visa. I used to love my Thailand visits, but the people are more cynical and less friendly. You have to make periodic visa runs. In Cambodia, I pay, I think @ $300 A year for a multiple entry visa. The people are by and large kind and it is cheap. That's why I choose Cambodia.

Tough one. I retired to Thailand in 2016 but moved because it was too hot for me. I lived in Cambodia for almost 4 years mainly due to covid visa restrictions and other illness but it is always an oven there and got way too boring. Vietnam has cooler areas and i lived in Dalat for 15mo. But the traffic, noise, smoking culture and boredom got me to move. I decided one area will always get same same after a while so i visit countries for short stays. India is the longest with 6mo per year visa.

Depends on your likes/dislikes. Vietnam doesn’t have a “retirement” visa per se. So you will have to leave the country and go back to renew your visa.

My husband and I were thinking of Cambodia. After a lot of research we loved the country but their health care is still 3rd world. It might have changed by now. But as of 3 years ago if you had something major go wrong they flew you to Thailand for a medical emergency.

So we chose Thailand because their health care is first world, their infrastructure is second world and the people and country are amazing.

Personally, I would say Vietnam because I love it here. But unfortunately there isn't a retirement visa. So you have to do a visa run every 3 months. But in Thailand there is a retirement visa. You have to have at least 30 K USD in your bank account and can't take let it go below that amount at anytime or you won't qualify.

The Vietnamese people have good hearts and a much more open mind about world knowledge.

I’m tired of dealing with the visa in Thailand. Having to transfer 65,000 THB every month when I can only spend 30 to 35,000, so then every few months I transfer money back to my U.S. bank.

Should be enough to prove your retirement income, Social Security exceeds the 65,000. As if a person isn’t going to use what they need of it to pay their expenses here.

The 90 day reports are a pain too.

Now the AI run facial recognition cameras all over, I constantly feel like Big Brother, 1984.

I’m going to check out Siem Reap Cambodia. One of the easiest retirement visas in the world. Sure, the healthcare isn’t nearly as good, but they can deal with most things, if you need major things Thailand is a hop skip and a jump away.

I carry a medical plan through Pacific Cross, best prices I found, that I will maintain that will get me back to Thailand if I have a major medical emergency and cover most things, zero deductible.

But other than that, Cambodia is calling my name. Easy!

Laos is also great. I prefer it to all three mentioned but, the best place whete your money is safe would be Malaysia. It is good, clean, safe, they do not discriminate and you can own land.

Many people say Thailand where I stayed for about 30 years, but you can not own land or a business, and immigration is just awful! Thailand is good for short term visits, but will bleed you dry at every turn.

Christian Bourget the 90 day reporting makes it annoying. The amount of documents and ever changing requirements are annoying.

Also visa requires mandatory health insurance which Thai insurance companies refuse to sell to people over a certain age. At which time you will be refused a visa. Already happened to some people I know or knew before they died.

I lived there for more than half my life. I am glad to be out of there at the moment.

If you want to live in a place with wall to wall sleaze and deception where everything is about how much money you have, without any concern about who you are or your feelings then have fun while it lasts.

If you value real sincere frienship not based around money then try Laos or Malaysia. While Laos has no retirement visa it is still very easy to get a one year visa. Once you have it you have a whole year without having to report to anyone.

Sorry for the rant, but I and people I have known, have been lied to, and scammed out of everything, too many times.

Then there are other places I have never had a problem.

JJ O Connor, the post asked the question which is the best. Kudos to Cambodia for improving Their health care that's true but their light years behind Thailand. Vietnam is improving much more quickly than Cambodia. As to the criminal element there are plenty in all three countries but anybody debating that Cambodia does not have the worst criminal elements of the three countries is kidding themselves it has nothing to do with Hatfield and McCoy LOL the Chinese scammers that are running compounds in Cambodia have more than 100,000 poor souls that have been abducted and are forced to scam people. They have a huge criminal infrastructure they have bought entire hotels and filled them with these unfortunate people .Don't be in denial, please. We have traveled to Cambodia and yes, I loved my time in Siem Reap. However a healthcare system that is improving will not help you when a serious healthcare issue arises.

Now, Vietnam has more infrastructure? Lmao you're funny, you tourist.

Healthier food? Not really, and not everywhere. Because hard to find : not fried food, sidedishes with no rice, roasted chicken or duck at good prices, already boiled eggs, organic shops where to buy good oils and other stuff (more stuff on Shopee), diversity of restaurants except in big cities...etc

Ok soups generally have less sugar.

Cheaper ? Globally yes, but not really if you want the healthy food I mentioned before.

Then, more thieves, more scams, more aggressive people, more reckless driving, more tr4sh on sidewalks and in countryside...

You are likely to get multiple different opinions..

It really comes down to your financial situation, lifestyle and accommodation expectations..

None are a bad choice and none are a perfect choice..

You should look very closely at the long term visa options for retirement before you decide as that's likely to be an issue in some countries like Vietnam..

Make sure you fully understand the entry and visa requirements for a long term stay and that may assist you in a decision..

@Bill ********
If you think $25k USD in the bank and border runs every ?6 months straightforward. $60 for a nanula visa. Then good luck to you. PLus regular rule changes

Comapre that to Vietname. 90 day visa then Border run. Plus regular rule changes.

or Cambodia Retirement visa. Multiple entry, $295 US per annum and no border runs required. No rule changes in last ? 8? years.

Then match cost of living related to your life style.

**************************************

Then if Healthcare is your main concern.

Vietnam and Thailand have qulity health care(at a price).

Cambodia is catching up fast with good healthcare options.,

I suspect many of the Thai fanboyz here have never spent a lot of time in any of Laos,Viertnam, Cambodia to give a meaningful opinion.

LychMe3000 it is funny how americans think that medicine in thailand is cheap. for me it is expensive. if i will break my leg, surgery will cost here 10k, i can fly back to russia and put titanium plate for 2k + tickets.

i recently renewed my vaccine from tetanus. originally i made it on samui in clinic for 430 bahts. then i tried to renew it in bangkok hospital and was charged for 1500 bants. i came to local clinic on bang na and made it for 250 bahts in 5 mins.

im very scary to get sick in thailand because local hospital will rip you off and quality of service is lower that in clinics. or you need to go in hospital for tourists, but exactly because of americans they increased service prices.

i know how expensive medicine is in usa but you should know all good doctors now migrating in europe and maybe canada.

here was case when one russian raper died in hospital and widow said that he was treated wrong and doctors made mistakes. and hospital sued her for slander and she was forced to leave country to avoid felony charges.

this is how medicine in thailand is works.

Potpong_Life I used to live in Malaysia, my ex wife is Malaysian, my son is partially, you cannot live there. They won't give you a long term visa unless you have USD $500.000 to open a business and employ 5 Malaysian Citizens. Stop spreading fake news., you know absolutely nothing about Malaysia immigration systems.

John So No not really, the only thing they have done different in the last 3 years is enforce the rules and stop those who circumvent them by using agents to deposit the required funds. The requirements themselves really have not changed.
