Has anyone renewed their British passport in Bangkok before? Was it easy and straight forward? Are we allowed to be in the country for a few weeks without a passport whilst it’s being renewed? Are your visas still active on the passport?
Answer summary
Renewing a British passport in Bangkok is generally a straightforward process facilitated by VFS Global, where you need to make an appointment. You will retain your old passport during the renewal, and your visas remain valid. It is necessary to have a photocopy of your existing passport's pages, and you can also authorize someone via power of attorney to handle the process for you. The new passport will be issued once the renewal process is complete, at which point the old passport will be marked as invalid.

You get to keep your passport while it's been renewed. Once you get the new one they will cut the edge of your old passport so it can no longer be used. Pretty straight forward, you can even do power of attorney and let someone go for you.
I just looked on line it has changed location but if you look up VFS GLOBAL on google it explains everything but I see you can pay extra option which cost 3500 baht and you can bypass the queue and sit in a lounge, face-to-face personal they would do everything for you, which includes all the photocopying and supply tea, coffee, and snacks for you while you’re waiting
when you apply online, make sure you use a supported browser. I can’t remember which way round it was, but either chrome or safari didn’t work, so I couldn’t select a date / time. So if it doesn’t work for you, try a different browser.
Maybe a dumb question - but how do they transfer the original visa, the last entry stamp and the next visa extension stamp..? Obviously they do or it wouldn't be much use haha! Just curious!
Very straight forward process, you need to make an appointment with VFS first though, and you keep your old passport, and when you go back to pick up your new one they cut the corner off. So no you do not send off your old passport but you must photocopy all of the pages of your old passport in colours though if you’re using VFS to renew it
Yes, it's pretty straightforward. UK passport renewals are not handled by the embassy but by VFS Global who have 2 offices, one in Bangkok and one in Chiang Mai. You have to attend in person or give someone a basic power of attorney to attend on your behalf with all the required documents
