Hi everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹ I would like to ride my motorbike from Bangkok to Mae Hong Son on October 1st, stay there for a week and then ride back. Is this possible? Would I be required to quarantine in any of the provinces along the way? Would I have to install one of the covid apps and do something with it at some point. If so, when and with which app? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the feasibility of riding a motorbike from Bangkok to Mae Hong Son in October, including potential quarantine requirements and necessary COVID-19 apps. Responses varied, with one comment indicating a possible quarantine if entering from Chiang Mai, while others reported smooth travels without issues, merely encountering temperature and passport checks at checkpoints.

Hey Jake, I'm actually planning on doing the Marhongson loop myself. I have a friend in Marhongson town who works for the local government (Don't know exactly what she does though), and she said everyone has to quarantine when entering Maehongson from chiang mai.

However, I also asked in a Chiang Mai group and multiple people said they've done the loop in the last week and had 0 problems. There are a couple checkpoints that take your temperature and look at your passport, but that's it. I sent them to her and she said that sounds about right.

Thanks for the info Garrett (y) I heard about the easing of restrictions on interprovincial travel, but I'm not sure if that's only for dark red zones. I'm not sure if individual provinces will still have their own rules. Nice to know that some people were able to make it there without having to quarantine. I'm thinking about moving there and want to check it out first.

Have you ever lived in Mae Hong Son (the city)? If so, what are your thoughts? Do you know if there are some decent pet-friendly apartments there? Are there any Facebook groups for foreigners that you can link me to?

When are you planning to go?

I've never lived in Maehongson, but I've been there a couple times. Without a doubt my favorite place in all of Thailand. In the winter time (nov-feb) it gets decently cold, like single digits/ teens.

I found the community up there extremely friendly and welcoming. Even the police would wave and say hello. There are condos, not sure about pet friendly though, I can ask my friend is she knows any places. One thing to note is that it is fairly isolated. The closest big C is about 2 hours away in Pai, so western stuff is a bit tough to get. Really nice 7-11 in town though, couple foriegners live up there and have a burger/pub.

Oh wow, I didn't realize it was that remote! I Googled the population earlier and it said 284,138, but I guess that's for the entire province, not the city. Looks like the city itself has only 7K people or so ๐Ÿ˜ฏ That's only 5K more than Pai, which I've been to a few times.

I checked Bring Fido and Booking dot com for pet-friendly hotels and it looks like there are a few, but I imagine finding the pet-friendly apartments would require an agent or a local who knows the city well. Yes, could you please ask your friend? I'd really appreciate it.

What about the air quality during burning season? Is it just as bad as Chiang Mai or not so bad?

Any idea if I could install 3BB fiber optic internet there or in Pai?

@Ja**
Lol, very much doubt there's fiber up there. I didn't have rocket speeds, but had pretty stable 30ish mbps speeds if I remember correctly. Yeah, Maehongson province is pretty large, its like a 6 hour drive from one side to the other. Dogs in the town were really friendly, ran into a bunch of them. There is burning up there, I remember riding up a huge mountain where they have microwave antennas and breaking through the smoke layer at the top. Can't say how bad it is though, not really something that bothers me personally.

Awesome! Thanks for the info ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah, I think I'll definitely check out the city at least and do some hiking and camping in the mountains while I'm there. Enjoy your trip! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Let's talk later on PM. I'm not sure when I'm heading up there, still in Phuket at the moment. But before end of the year I'll get up there.
