Is it that tricky to open a Thai bank account on the 60 day tourist visa?
Answer summary
Opening a Thai bank account on a 60-day tourist visa is largely considered impossible by many expats. Most believe that a long-term visa, such as a Non-O visa, is required. While some agents may claim they can facilitate this process, accounts opened under a tourist visa are subject to being frozen or closed later. Alternatives for tourists include using travel cash cards or financial services like Wise instead of a local bank account.

I may get grilled for this and may be wrong, but as I am aware there is a way to apply for a non o over 50 visa whilst on a tourist visa in country. In this instance you need the relative funds in a bank account for 2 months at which point you will be granted your year extension which will allow the account to stay open... but if you do not complete the process the account will be frozen. I have not tried it is only what I have learnt from my own research

Yes, the best option is to first apply for a Non-O visa while outside of Thailand

Once you arrive in Thailand, you’ll be able to open a Thai bank account.

Alternatively, you can use an agency to assist with opening a bank account while you’re in Thailand. However, this can be quite expensive and is generally unnecessary if you’re currently outside Thailand and have enough time to apply for the Non-O visa first.

Not tricky at all, it's impossible as it's now allowed. It's no different to other countries, in UK you have to have proof of who you are (UK status) and where you live such as a utility bill in your name so not possible for a tourist to own a UK bank account and even to the point that when you become an expat and not living full time in UK you bank account will be closed, same as is happening in Thailand now,

Dave Morris or just do like the overwhelming majority and get your non O in your home country based on your home bank account. Get to Thailand and open a Thai bank account with your non o and a little additional paperwork. Then deposit your 800k in your new thai bank account and apply for your 1 year extension. It's really very simple. Don't over complicate things and put obstacles in your own way.

@Dave *******
you can't apply for a retirement extension without first having the appropriate visa to allow you to do so. Get the 90 day Non-O visa based on being 50 or older before you travel to Thailand or if you are already in Thailand leave to a nearby country, get that visa and return. Then go to your local immigration office and obtain a residence certificate, a phone shop and obtain a Thai SIM registered against your passport and then visit a bank and ask to open an account. You might have to visit a couple of branches
Marianne ********
Marianne ********
Dave Morris Getting the visa before leaving is how you are supposed to do it.

Applying for the Non-O outside of Thailand lets you use proof of funds in your current accounts.

When you arrive, you sort out your banking and transfer your funds. And then you are ready to apply for your first yearly extension of stay after the 90 days on the Non-O is coming to an end.
