TLDR : Answer Summary
When changing the reason for a Non-O visa renewal from 'Marriage to a Thai National' to 'Retirement', it is typical to incur a charge of ฿2,000, along with an additional ฿500 'labour' charge at immigration offices. However, switching between reason categories does not typically involve a new application fee beyond the regular renewal cost of ฿1,900. It's important to note that the renewal starts from the date of application rather than extending the existing visa validity.

When you do an extension for the second year in a row, you can, at no extra cost, switch from, for example, retired to married or vice versa

@Jim ******
its true, ask imigration

There is now a 500 baht 'labour' charge at immigration offices for most visas.... Its up on a sign on the wall

Crazy indeed 😮

I didn't see it at Chaengwattana this last week

No one has reported it at Chiang Mai or Phuket or Jomtien, and it's not on ANY groups related to thai visas

In fact Chaengwattana has signs that say if you DON'T get a receipt to tell them 😮

@Tod ********
there is no signage at Phetchaburi immigration that says that either Tod.

@Tod ********
, I was in for my retirement renewal and charged 2400 bht, it was when I was waiting on passport to be returned I saw the sign, definitely includes most visas
Tod *********
@Mick ******
and did you get a receipt that showed 2400 baht? or just 1900baht?
Mick *******
@Tod ********
, full receipt for 2400... I was expecting 1900 as usual. The sign is upstairs above the water machine in the seated waiting area...

I've got no reason to lie, hopefully someone else can take a picture today or tomorrow if they are in
Tod *********
@Mick ******
nope not saying you're lying at all sir, sorry if it seemed that way 😕

What a chicken-sh*t thing for them to do 🙁 but at least you got a receipt for the 2400 baht which is a lot better than the O/P got

I just put it down to the increased cost of office coffee and donuts😜

@Mick ******
where is that signage and what office is that at? I was at Chaengwattana this last week and saw NO sign like that
Mick *******
@Tod ********
, it was main immigration Huahin. I shall take a photo next time I'm in.

@Mick ******

thanks for that information. I just don’t like to feel as if I have been conned.
Tod *********
@Jim ******
well you were because you didn't get a receipt for the 1900baht extension cost OR the imaginary 500 baht labor fee and you didn't get the 100baht change from the 2000 you paid for the 1900baht extension either
Jim *******

@Tod ********
not really as I made a conscious decision not to rock the boat as I had my extension denied last year for

spurious reasons. The result was I had to go to Vientiane and get a new Non Immigrant Visa.
Tod *********
@Jim ******
well it is what it is, thank you for reporting about it,

and
@Mick ******
thanx for reporting it as well (y)

Let's see if other offices jump on this bandwagon,

pretty far from a "quick question" 😕

You're not changing a Non-O to anything, 😕

If you are on a yearly extension based on marriage to a thai, and you want to switch to a yearly extension based on being over 50 (retirement) it's the same cost as all extensions inside thailand 1900baht ..

All you're doing is changing the reason for the extension when it comes up for a new one from one reason to another.

Keep in mind when you do a 'reason change' on an extension they don't add the new year to your current expiration date, they start it the day you apply, so if you went early (before your current extension expires) you usually lose those days

thank you, I was charged ฿2,000 for the extension and ฿500 for the change of reason from Marriage to Retirement!. Also was not offered receipt for payment!

@Jim ******
any time you pay official money and don't get a receipt you are paying "under the table".

You, then, need to make the decision about taking the risks.
Tod *********
@Jim ******
and you were already on a year extension based on marriage to a thai right? you were just applying for a new year extension for a different reason?
Jim *******

@Tod ********
that’s correct.

well it's quite a bit after the fact 😕 sorry that happened,
