What happens to my visa date if I change the reason for my Non-Immigrant 'O' extension in Thailand?

Please note that if you extend a non-immigrant 'o' stay, and change the reason (e.g. marriage to retirement or vice versa), then the date will be reset to the date you submit. This is worth noting as it is possible to submit up to 45 days before expiry, meaning up to 45 days could be lost due to the process of cancelling the original extension due to change of reason.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When extending a non-immigrant 'O' visa in Thailand and changing the reason (e.g., switching from marriage to retirement or vice versa), the extension date is reset to the submission date. This means that if you submit up to 45 days before expiry, you could potentially lose those days due to the cancellation of the original extension. Immigration officers typically cancel the current extension and require you to apply for a new one based on the new reason.

They usually don't cancel a marriage extension when you switch to retirement or vice versa. Unless you're getting it out of sequence <- before your next extension is due.

They do not switch any extension before the due date is near. I tried to change my extension (based on a work permit) into a marriage halfway halfway: no way. I had to wait till the end date of my visa.

was this at Chaengwattana? I've seen people cancel extensions with documentation before it was going to run out and then immediately apply for a new one, AND I've seen people just wait until they applied for a new extension and change the reason.

yes.but indeed you can ask to stop your extension. If you get a new and other extension is then a risk.

I should have waited until nearer the old extension due date. This is why I mentioned the possibility to renew 45 days earlier, which is fine if you don't change the reason.

Would the advice have been to renew on the next extension due date?
Tod *********
totally does happen every time you change the reason for an extension, marriage to retirement or retirement to marriage

In fact you do not change. You cancel your current Extension of Stay and you apply for a new Extension of Stay with a different reason.

Did this happen to you?

I extended today, changing the reason, and my new expiry date is 20 September (previously 11 October).
