Is it legal to have multiple health insurance policies in Thailand and make claims on them?

I have a question about health insurance. I'm thinking of taking out a health insurance with a quite high deductible to keep the premium at a reasonable level. But I already have an insurance with my Thai bank that covers me for up to 50000 per time in hospital. I'm thinking of running both insurances to cover for the big event and for the small event? Has anyone done this? Is it legal?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the legality and practicality of holding multiple health insurance policies for expats in Thailand. It's highlighted that while an individual can legally have multiple insurance policies, claiming for the same medical expense from different companies is prohibited. Users share their experiences of having two policies simultaneously to cover different types of situations, such as smaller and larger medical events, and emphasize the importance of not claiming the same expense twice. The topic of health insurance costs and comparisons of different insurance companies is also mentioned.

I'm currently scrutinizing the numerous qoutes I've got from all the companies ive emaiked. Some have large deductibles some just basic cover. Some inpatient only. Some policies dont raje effect immediately. It's all about personal choice and the extent of the cover needed obviously determines the price. When I know more will send you info. Same same

I have had health insurance here with BUPA Thailand ( now called AETNA)for 17 years. I am now 76. Insured IPD for 1 million baht hospital cover per annum. Recently added the required 40,000 baht OPD as dictated by Immigration in order to renew my one year retirement extension. The shocking premium was 207,000 baht !!!!!!! Please dont suggest the Elite Visa Program as I would still need health insurance and I don’t travel in or out of Thailand. No tax deductions available to me. Therefore I would not recommend this company as it is now.

Yes. I am aware of that alternative whenever the borders open for exit and Re entry. And yes the new OPD requirement is a joke anyway. AETNA bought in pre existing conditions ( which I don’t have in their IPD policy) and one can only claim something like 1,670 baht per visit up to a total of 40,000 for the year. However at 77 years of age with pre existing conditions, to change insurers would be difficult. Thanks for your reply anyway.

@Geoff *******
Ridiculous amount. I hope you find a better/cheaper solution soon.

Sloman when borders open you can change to an O which doesn't need insurance. Health insurance is still advisable as you say but you can then choose whichever policy including from international insurers, and ditch the OPD cover if you feel you can cover that out of pocket.

How much is your policy?

I just got an excellent policy that covers $1 million usd total payout.

I can use all over se asia and 7 weeks per visit to the west.

$1400 per year is my premium. After looking at what was available and what was the payouts i got the above.

Oh. And i can pay monthly at no extra cost.

What insurance is this? Normally I travel 1 month here, one month here, and most insurance doesn't cover travelers webinar don't go home after "each" trip.

I'm ok with a single total.1Mthb isn't much so 1Musd total sounds fine.

I don't need cover for small stuff.

No, won't give anyone "my contact info for personal quote". Lol

I think you can have 2 policies, when u file a claim, make sure that you are not reimbursed for the same expense. Check the fine.print it may say which policy will.cover and how much. But never never get paid for the same expense. U.spend 1000€ and get paid 1000€ plus or twice.
Brett *******
I run 2 policies to cover different issues. No problem.
Stuart *********
You can have as many insurance policies as you like and all completely legal. Claiming for something from more than one company would be where issues would become murky.
Nick ************
I would suggest that you could pay for as many insurance policies as you like but you would be breaking the law if you claimed for the same thing off more than one.
