Hello Admin and Members,

I have a question, I have a O visa based on family which I got last year from Penang based on the excellent advice from here!

My question is there any advantage to apply for a new visa when my current visa runs out instead of a Extension of stay?

TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires whether it is more advantageous to apply for a new O visa upon expiration of the current one or to seek an extension of stay. They clarify that their O visa was granted based on their status as a guardian of a Thai child, not marriage to a Thai national.

I’m not married, the visa was based on my daughter. Sorry I should have been clearer about that!

nope you read wrong, you need to be on yearly extensions of stays NOT visas for the permanent resident/citizenship route. The visa from Penang does NOT count in acruuing time in country towards either of those.

You need to get YEARLY EXTENSIONS from the immigration office not visas from thai consulates.

For you other question, yes after several Extensions of Stay, working in Thailand and lots of other requirements you can apply for citizen ship. Best is to visit the region head quarters of Royal Thai Police for the requirements.

With all the documents of the family court you can apply for the Extension of Stay at your local Immigration Office. As we all know, there are no lists of requirements to fit all, best is to visit your local office and ask for the hand out with requirements.

Hi Robert, I have all the paperwork from the family court.

I vaguely remember reading about if you have 5 repeat visa’s/extension of stats etc you can apply for another visa which is linked to citizenship, owning land etc. Does this ring any bells with you just as a curiosity

If you are the legal parent by family court or by Amphur, with all the documents you can apply for an Extension of Stay at Immigration Office. If you just have your name on the birth certificate you have to visit Penang again for a new visa.

Based on family, this means your based on married to a Thai National or depending/guardian of a half Thai child?
