No guessing please :)

If awaiting approval post request for documents and one's flight date is drawing near, is it appropriate/acceptable/advisable to send a polite inquiry or not?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When waiting for visa approval and your flight date is near, it is both acceptable and advisable to send a polite inquiry to the relevant authority. Some users have reported success in getting a quick response after emailing their visa office. Keep your message friendly and provide relevant details such as your flight schedule to facilitate a helpful reply.

The worst case is they just disregard your email and not reply. It won’t impact you negatively. Just make sure your email is friendly and not harsh or demanding
