Hi all, I am an Australian and I am coming to live in Thailand on a permanent basis. I plan to start on a visa exemption and when I arrive, apply for the DTV straight away. Is it advisable to do this if you can’t wait for the DYV process to take place here in Australia?

TLDR : Answer Summary
An Australian expat discusses plans to move permanently to Thailand, initially entering on a visa exemption and seeking to apply for the DTV visa. Community responses indicate that the DTV application must be done outside Thailand, preferably in Australia through the Thai consulate, as applying from within Thailand is not an option. Contributors also recommend ensuring the application is accurate to avoid delays, and highlight the importance of securing a long-term visa before arrival.

Get the DTV first. Apply online thru their thai evisa website. It doesn't take long, approx. 1-2 weeks if you provide sufficient docs. Double check your application form before payment, make sure everything spells correctly or you'll need to apply and pay again.

There's a DTV group on fb where you'll find lots of tips from other applicants

My question to you is "why can't you wait to get the DTV there"?

You apply for and get the DTV approved by using the online eVisa system at the thai consulates in Oz.

Apply for it, upload the documentation, pay and wait for the approval to come in the email. Print out the PDF that is your visa then show up here and get stamped in for 180days

Why would you want to come here free stamp (60 day visa exempt) entry THEN fool with leaving the country again to apply for a DTV at a thai consulate nearby?

You said you're coming to live to thailand on a permanent basis which leads me to believe that having a visa which lets you stay here long term should be pretty high up on the list of things to have BEFORE you wing your way here 🙂

If your profile is to be believed and you're in Melbourne you'd apply thru the thai consulate in Canberra which has a posted processing time of 10 business days <- IF you get your documents uploaded correctly the first time and they don't need to ask you for more

(y) I would certainly get your 5 year visa THEN come here to live as then visa/entry/extension issues would be out of the way for the foreseeable future.

Good luck with it, and safe travels to you
