Return/onward tickets are not required from DTV holders. Where the belief comes from that one is needed upon the first entry only the troll knows.

I wouldn't confuse "not always asked for" with "not worth having." DTV holders are often admitted without showing onward travel, but immigration can still ask about your plans. For a first entry, I'd have an onward ticket or other credible travel plan ready rather than make that the point you test at the desk.
