TLDR : Answer Summary
The term '60-day visa on arrival' is a misnomer, as the actual visa on arrival grants only a 15-day entry stamp. In contrast, a visa exemption allows for a 60-day stay in Thailand. Extensions are possible for an additional 30 days for a fee, and one can do border runs to reset their stay. While there is no formal limit on how many days can be stayed in a calendar year, excessive long-term stays (over 180 days) may prompt scrutiny from immigration officers, potentially leading to questioning or denial of entry.

I was warned last week after recieving my 3rd extension that I would not be getting another one.

You do not need to expect problems if you stay below 180 days per year. Beyond that, you might expect being questioned and/or denied entry when trying to get in.

180 days calendar or sliding?

Thanks

good point. This one is sliding. Taxation on the other hand goes by calendar year.

Until you can't. There's no official limit, it's down to the immigration officer you face at the time

60 days exemption. Extend for 30 days 1900baht. Leave country after 90 days...come back in with another 60 days...wash and repeat. Unlimited air and border runs. As long as your TM 30s reflect moving around the country you will not draw attention from immigration

after 6+ months on visa exception questions will get asked, worst case denied entry โ€ฆ

or you just draw attention, you are not giving a correct reply, IMO at the boundary (land, sea or air) will approve or denie your entry

if you are truly a tourist, which I am, and slow traveling then you could not possibly see all of this great country in 6 months

@Nicole ***************
I agree with you there is a lot to see, but when you stay more than 6 months IMO also might want to know about your financial situation and how you live, besides there are also tourist visa...

@Nicole ***************
what has that to do with anything? I also do slow travel, so i get a suitable visa. DTV is also a tourist visa btw.

Please stop giving incorrect advice

the DTV stands for Destination Thailand Visa. It is set up for people that are on a workcation or want to learn Thai or Muay Thaiโ€ฆalso long term medical treatment. Yes, very new. Only in effect since July.

There is no such thing as a 60 day visa on arrival. Visa on arrival is where you apply for and pay for a visa at the airport, and you receive a 15 day entry stamp.

Visa exempt currently gives 60 days permission to stay, and is not a visa. It's called visa exempt because you are exempt from needing a visa. It is just an entry stamp.

There is no official limit to how many days you can stay in Thailand. But that does not mean it's unlimited. You can do it as many times as they let you. Each and every entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer you are standing in front of. If you do it too many times, or spend too long in Thailand without a long-term visa, you will start to encounter issues. They will pull you out of line and interview you, ask you what you think you are doing, possibly ask to see proof of funds and proof of your ticket out of Thailand. Eventually they will either warn you to get a proper long-term visa or they will just deny entry to you altogether. Most people start to encounter this around 6 months in the country, but it's completely random.

I was about to suggest copy paste because this question is asked multiple times every day but of course you do that already ๐Ÿ˜Š
