TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand with a DTV Visa, it is generally recommended that your passport be valid for at least 6 months. Although technically, as long as the passport is valid, entry is possible, airlines might require 6 months validity to allow boarding.
Generally 6 months for any visa, but if i had less than 5 years i would get new passport before getting the DTV. I had 2 years left and got a new one to avoid the hassle of moving visa to new passport
all of that is normally for visaless tourists. If you have a visa, normally you can enter if your passport is still valid and make a new passport inside Thailand.
this is true but in the case of Thailand they have no minimum requirement, they simply won't stamp you in for any period beyond the validity of your passport
It seems you don't get it? But I'm talking from my own experience. People with visas that allow them to live in the country can normally enter as long as the passport is still valid and get a new passport inside the country. It's like that like for all countries. That's the distinction between visitors and non visitors.
good for you I’ve also lived out side of my own country for along time.
You say you have lived out for 15 years so you have got one new full length passport in 15 years ?
And your also going to
Tell me that you
Need more then 6 months to apply for a DTV , but you can come with a month left ? No chance.
Chances are most country’s atleast Australia won’t even let you leave with less then 6 months validity.
Even most airlines won’t even check you in.
I know this because when I was working in Laos 4 years ago I tried the same thing to go back to work 1 day under 6 months ( thinking I could get a new passport whilst at work) with no success.
is actually right here in that Thailand doesn't have this explicit rule. Here's an example from the Brussels embassy, they strongly advise you get a new passport if you have less than six months but also say you can try it if you don't have time. The main issue is your airline may deny you, and this is why everyone says 6 months. But it's not actually a legal condition of entry to Thailand like it is to most countries.
yea, the MFA talk about 6 months but they are not the guys in charge of stamping you into the country. I do agree you'd be silly to travel with less than 6 months unless you were somewhere that it was impossible to obtain a new passport
