I have a trip coming up and we're renting a car. I realised just now my license expired on my birthday a few days ago. I understand I need a certificate of residence, does anyone know how long it takes to get one? Someone told me a week, another told me a day. My office is Samut Prakan.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The certificate of residence can typically be obtained the same day at the immigration office in Samut Prakan, often for a fee around 500 baht, although some people report needing to return after a week. The exact timing can vary based on individual circumstances and the specific immigration office experiences.
Most offices will issue the same day for 500 baht but Samut Prakan does not have a good reputation for doing anything speedy. The certificate is free btw
Deslea Selmes there's usually an option to pay to receive it the same day. It's an emergency, so it's worth him asking. I have always received mine on the same day (usually a few minutes), but that was at different immigration offices.
You can get the certificate of residence the same day at immigration, but you need to pay a couple of hundred baht (I can't remember how much exactly).
You need to get your Residence Cert. From immigration, your Health Cert from a clinic, take those to a licensed driving school, now here's the fun part, watch the safety video.... the driving school will then give you a form verifying all that then off to the DLT where after you do a few tests they will issue you your new license.
All this will cost no more than about B1200. An agent will charge B3500 minimum even though you still need to jump through all the hoops mentioned above.
