How long can I stay outside Thailand with a re-entry permit before my extension of stay expires?

I have a 1 year extension of stay based on retirement due for renewal in January 2019, if I get a re-entry permit and leave Thailand next month how long can I stay out of Thailand for.

As long as you return BEFORE the expiration date of your current extension you can apply for a new one without having to start the whole process over.
