Returning to home country after tourism in Thailand.

When making multiple visits to Thailand within 1 year, it is said that this is viewed more favourably by Thai immigration officials than going to 3rd countries before visiting Thailand again.

How would Thai immigration officials know if someone returned to their home country?

Before anyone attacks me for asking this question, I always return to my home country and I only visit Thailand twice a year with an appropriate visa.
Answer summary
The discussion centers around how Thai immigration officials track a traveler's movements, particularly when they return to their home country before re-entering Thailand. Various comments suggest that officials can access the travel history through passport stamps, electronic records, and boarding passes. However, the consensus is that the system focuses more on the duration spent in Thailand than on the exact countries visited in between visits. Additionally, the effectiveness of Thai immigration's monitoring systems and the importance of obtaining the appropriate visas are also highlighted.

visiting twice a year for under what was 60 days now back to 30 days will not raise any red flags for Thai Immigration as many people travel a couple of times a year . And if staying longer than 30 days and you have the right visa should not be an issue.

The obvious way Immigration knows is the stamps in your passport.

I had a friend who dated a very hi so girl in Bangkok. He left Thailand and told her he was going home. In fact he went to Dubai for a week to watch a golf tournament. Later that year he went on holiday with his wife and kids( Thai girl had no idea he was still with his wife) when he came back she asked him did he go home. Obviously his answer was yes. She told him he went to Dubai. Shocked he said to a golf tournament. She was ok with that. Then she asked about his family holiday. Quick thinking he said he went with his sister.

She had a cousin in the airport and he got his passport travel details.

They know where you go

Thai AI system will check how many day you have spent in Thailand within 1 year before new arrival. If more than 150 days it is a reason for interview. No matter which country you stayed before. No need to visit your home country but it is better to get long term visa.

Steven Scott most countries don't stamp the passport on entry and now even Thailand is starting to use automatic gates for entry with no stamp in the passport so how can you say everything is in the passport?
Steven *******
Steven *******
Elías Molina what so you have not ever travelled then , as that is the only way nothing is in your passport. Because if you have travelled " EVERY " STAMP is information to immigration and tells them everything .

Your passport travel history on their screen

OP
Todd McGowan all stays, entries, exits, overstays are recorded and I'm assuming the system is able to link previous passports to current passports.

However, my question is how does immigration know where you went when you left the country?

I'm not aware of any part of the process where this is captured.

The only capture point I can think of would be the scan of the boarding pass at security but I very much doubt this is linked to the immigration record.

Paul Singlehurst-Ward you already answered your own question. ‘All stays, entries, exits, overstays are recorded’.

For all countries. And all are viewable to IO’s anywhere

Gray Allen Since May 2024 when they actually stored the information

Previously they used a failed system (usual Thai style) but the actually paid the extra money to get a fully operational system
Todd *********

Gray Allen yes. Your passport has a microchip
Max ********

Paul Singlehurst-Ward they can and do ask for boarding tickets at immigration.
Paul ******************
Paul ******************
OP
Todd McGowan that chip only stores your passport identification details. It is read only memory and does not capture travel history. That is done by the immigration system. However, I don't believe immigration captures travel destinations.

Before they looked at the stamps in your passport, now they look at a computer screen.

They would know if you arrived back into Thailand say from Vietnam. And you showed them your return flight back to your home country before you enter Thailand again.

I don't think they care, or even know, where you're going when you leave. You might be transiting via another country rather than taking a direct flight. But what counts as "home" anyway? I travel on a UK passport, but I've lived in the Philippines for 30 years, and I call that my home.
Brandon ************
Brandon ************
It really doesn't matter that much. They care mostly about how much time you've spent in Thailand. If you just spent 3 months in Thailand as a tourist, and then you leave for a week and return, immigration doesn't care if you left to Vietnam or if you went home. They still know a border run to get a new stamp when they see it.
