TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about applying for the STV visa to visit Thailand and stay for up to 9 months. Comments suggest that while the STV allows for up to 270 days of stay with extensions, the requirements are stringent and converting to other visa types is not permitted. Instead, some recommend starting with a normal tourist visa that can be later converted to an education visa, especially for activities like Muay Thai training.

I'm here on an STV. The visa itself & the extensions are cheap compared to normal visas. The 90 day extensions cost the same as 30 or 60 days on othet visas.

What is expensive is the insurance - its not normal holiday insurance, but then you're here for 9 months so you shouldn't expect it to be. Either way its not cheap.

The requirement that you have to pay up front for your next 3 months of accomodation when you do the extension is def a pain.

But mostly, like Covid extensions, the biggest pain is that each immigration office seems to have different requirements. So where I extended they wanted all sorts of stuff from the people who owned our hotel even though its not in the rules.

Your better off coming on a normal tourist visa & then swapping to an education one once here tbh.

nice summary of what we know to be the nightmare

If he's on an education visa, he can't travel because he has to study

but he can study remotely no ? Though perhaps the same thing about your TM30 registration still applies in that case as it does for an STV. Such a weird requirement of the STV visa. Come here, travel around, but not too much...

Anyway, OP stear clear. Its worked out fine for us but its been a right pain for many. We've just been lucky so far.

The STV is a badly named visa. It's supposed to be for the snowbirds who come to Thailand from Europe, who have a condo here, and live here for half the year. It's not designed as a general tourist visa :(

You should be able to stay 270 days in Thailand on an STV. HOWEVER, the requirements to get the extension of stay are high, and you can not convert the STV to other types of visas.

Here's the official requirements for a 90 day extension of stay based on STV from Bangkok Immigration.

I *DO NOT* recommend this visa at all.

Iโ€™m going try to Ride to all 77 provinces (if the province restrictions permit me ) this trip was planed for my 40th bday in April 2020 but the situation put a spanner in the works

The STV will be a very BAD visa for this, unless you're planning on returning to a pre-paid "home" every 90 days.

is there any other option available or are my options limited .

@Steven *******
You're probably off entering on a 60 day tourist visa, getting a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism, and seeing what other options may exist then
