We’ll be entering Thailand in a month on a 60 day tourist visa for the first time as a family from the US. Do we need a certain amount of baht(40k?) in hand when we land? Or some type of proof of funds?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa, it is generally advisable to be prepared with proof of funds, which can be 40,000 baht or equivalent in another currency. While many travelers report not being asked for this documentation, being prepared is recommended as the law has been in effect for many years. Most comments suggest that border control is not strict for first-time visitors, yet carrying the funds might be necessary for families as a precaution.

While it's all well and good to read fuzzy feel good stories ;) about how people sailed thru passport control for years and years without a problem, that doesn't mean YOU will skate thru the same way. :O
The law about proof of funds, proof of onward travel and proof of a hotel booking has been in effect for nearly 40 years now.
There is no down side to being prepared just in case you're asked. And yes for families it's 40K baht or the equivalent.
Got it, and I guess I can just exchange it for Baht after that? Is there a place that's better than the other when we arrive to exchange or are the rates pretty much the same
When you are requested to show proof of funds stamping into the country you CANNOT show a bank statement, you must show CASH.

Thanks Tod, I guess my main question was just if it needed to be on-hand, if I needed to carry a bank statement and if it needed to be in baht or just the equivalent and Robert answered a couple of those for me.

I've been visiting Thailand regularly for the last 9 years and I've never once been asked for anything other than my passport at the immigration counter. You'll be fine.

Visiting from the UK on a 60 day SETV we didn’t get asked for anything, just made sure we presented the page in the passport with the visa

If it is your first time, the chance of getting questioned is almost zero, but 40k Thb or equivalent currency could be asked to a family.
