TLDR : Answer Summary
The question pertains to whether applicants need to book and pay for their flights prior to applying for a Thai visa at the UK Embassy. Responses from the community indicate varying experiences: some individuals were not asked for flight details or booked tickets until after submitting their applications, while others had to provide e-ticket information shortly after applying. Several suggest that opting for refundable tickets can mitigate financial risks if the visa is denied. Overall, it appears policies may differ across embassies, and having a planned itinerary might suffice.

London asked me for my e-ticket, but couldve been because I put the flight number as the one from Dubai to BKK as it was a connecting flight.

You don't need to buy a real ticket. Planning your itinerary is enough, because if your visa is denied, you'll lose money.

It depends. Some embassies do demand you to show fully paid real tickets.

I didn’t book a flight and they never asked me. I took a gamble that if they did ask me for tickets I’d take it as a good sign and quickly buy them at that stage. But as I say, they never asked.

You could book a fully refundable ticket and accommodation, and provide the documents if asked, and cancel or change afterwards. For example, KLM has fully refundable tickets from Europe. United airlines has fully refundable award tickets up until last minute. Agoda has fully refundable hotel bookings up until a couple days before the reservation. That's what I normally do for every country I visit in case they ask for a return ticket.
