I want to apply for the DTV soon. I have a family of 4, do I have to show 500,000 baht for each person or 500,000 for all 4 of us?
Answer summary
When applying for the DTV visa for a family of four, the general requirement is to show 500,000 baht per person, totaling 2,000,000 baht for the entire family. However, this may vary by embassy, as some may allow the primary visa holder to sponsor dependents differently. It is advised to check the specific requirements of the embassy where you are applying.

Another lazy person, than won’t do any effort himself to do proper research, but just put up questions that has been answered numerous times allready.
Every Thai Embassy process visa applications little different, so without information about which Embassy you apply at, you won’t get right information.
The answer can vary among the Thai Embassy or Consulate. What is the passport nation AND ages of those who will be applying for the Thai Visa?
As you appear to be with an American 🇺🇸 passport, are you legally Married to your spouse and the Mother of the children?
Suggest you use the search 🔍 tool top of the DTV forum page to read the posts and experiences of others who have obtained the DTV visa from the US Thai Consulate in New York City.

For what purpose for the DTV visa are you and your spouse applying for the DTV visa?
Official rule is *500,000 THB per person*, not per family.
For a family of 4 it means:
- You as main applicant: 500,000 THB
- Spouse: 500,000 THB
- Child 1: 500,000 THB
- Child 2: 500,000 THB
- *Total to show: 2,000,000 THB*
Each dependent applies separately after you are approved, with marriage certificate for spouse and birth certificates for children. Unmarried partners do not count as dependents.
In practice it depends on the embassy you apply through:
- *Strict embassies* like Taipei, Jakarta, many EU posts: Want to see the full amount per person, either in separate accounts or one joint account with both names and the combined balance. For 4 people that is 2M in one account they can clearly link to you.
- *More flexible embassies* like Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh: Sometimes accept a family pool and lower amount for small children. They care that the family can support itself, not the exact math per child.
Best strategy for approval:
1. Pick one embassy and check their specific checklist for dependents
2. Keep the funds seasoned for 3 months minimum, not a last minute deposit
3. If you can show 2M THB equivalent in your account with clear relationship documents, you will avoid issues anywhere. If you cannot, email your chosen embassy first and ask if they accept sponsorship letter from main holder for minor children.
You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.
There is some ambiguity in that each Embassy or Consulate may have their own internal rules such as each person above the age of 16 needs proof of 500k THB (either in separate accounts or in one combined account so 2 people would be 1m THB). Some may allow the primary visa holder to sponsor all the dependents with the same 500k while some may require 500k PP regardless of age.
Realistically, your best bet would be to reach out to the Embassy/Consulate that you are applying to for clarification.
