Do I need to return to Thailand by my 90-day reporting date if I'm on a non-O visa?

I'm on a non-o visa (3 months + 12 months) and my first 90 day report on 23 Feb. I am returning to Australia to take care of some personal business. Should I return in time for the 1st report date?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are on a non-O visa and leave Thailand before your first 90-day reporting date, you do not need to report as long as you leave on day 89 or earlier. The reporting will restart upon your return, but make sure to obtain a re-entry permit before leaving to keep your visa valid.

Essential you have a re entry permit before you leave otherwise your visa is cancelled as you exit the country.

90 day will begin fresh again on re entry.

Reporting is only required if you stay for 90 consecutive days in Thailand. If you leave on day 89 or earlier the need to report stops. It will restart at day 1 on your return. Just make sure you have a re-entry permit to keep your allowed to stay date “alive”.
