Hi I am confused? I have a multiple entry non immigrant O A visa which is due to expire in July 2020. I last re entered Thailand in January 2020 and on my passport stamp is written permitted to stay until January 2021. Do I still have to renew my visa in July 2020 when it expires or in January 2021 ? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the confusion surrounding the expiration of a multiple entry non-immigrant O-A visa. It clarifies that the visa expiration date and the permitted stay duration noted on the passport stamp are different. The visa sticker expires in July 2020, while the entry stamp allows for stay until January 2021.

Thanks so much Tod ๐Ÿ‘ so if I was to leave and re enter in July before the Visa expires would I get a stamp for another year? I realise that it probably won't be possible because of travel restrictions

CORRECT (y) IF you were able to leave and re-enter the country before your VISA sticker expired you would indeed get stamped in for a whole new year

The reason I didn't mention it was because I can't see them getting the country opened up for you to bounce out and back before the visa itself expires.

You're good to stay here until Jan 2021 right now.

BUT

if you are going to leave the country and come back after the visa expires (July 2020) you would need to buy a re-entry permit (from immigrations office or at the airport) before you fly out to get back into the country and be stamped in until Jan 2021 again.

If you're not leaving the country you're fine and can stay until Jan 2021 no problem.

I think you're just confusing

an entry stamp <- which is what lets you stay inside thailand

with a visa <- which is what lets you apply to get in to thailand.

You are allowed to be here on the rectangular entry stamp you got when you stamped in, and because you had an O-A visa in your passport it meant you get stamped in for a whole year (because that is the terms of that particular visa).
Tod *********
You are confusing two completely different things. The expiration date of the VISA <- the sticker put in your passport at the thai consulate (which is a year from the date they issued it

AND

The expiration date of your ENTRY STAMP that you got when you entered thailand on that visa. Which is a year from the date you enter the country.
Tod *********
That O-A visa is sold as a multi-entry visa meaning during the validity of the visa you can exit/re-enter as much as you want and every time you do enter you're stamped in for a whole new year.

That's why the last time you entered (Jan 2020) you were stamped in until Jan 2021.

You will not be required to apply for a yearly extension until the entry stamp dated Jan 2021 runs out.
