Affirmation of Marital Status.

I understand that I'll have to go to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok to obtain this document and also have it translated into Thai.

Do I have to provide a copy of my Texas divorce decree or is this not necessary?

Thanks everyone.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry is about whether a Texas divorce decree is necessary when obtaining an affirmation of marital status at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. Many responses indicate that it is advisable to bring the divorce papers, as they were requested in past experiences by several individuals. Additionally, having certified copies of the divorce decree and birth certificate is suggested, along with personal references and marriage/divorce dates. Although some have noted that the embassy did not ask for their divorce decree, bringing it is recommended as a precaution.

They say to bring it but they never asked me. They have computers their that would give them access to find quickly but to be honest I don't think they even care. I had my documents in 5 minutes. Just paid the fee. Easy peezy. The united states' doesn't realize the marriage in Thailand so they don't care. And I am talking about the US embassy. I brought 2 sets with the Texas seal on them to be safe and no one ever asked to see them. Literally I was in and out in five minutes. Be aware not to take a backpack with any of electronic like a power bank. I had to throw money away or they tell you go down the street and rent a locker.

The affidavit is your signed statement that you can legally marry, and that's it. I brought my divorce decree but was never asked for it.

You will need 2 certified copies of your final divorce decree and 2 certified copies of your birth certificate.

Oh and you need the location where it was filed with the courts. Bring a regular copy for your own information to copy the details asked on the affidavit

at $50 US dollars each document it makes a difference since I was required to get a certified copy of my passport and a certified copy of the marriage affidavit.

it makes a bigger difference if I don't have them, fly to Bangkok from Khon Kaen, spend the night in a hotel and then can't get what I need because they want to see the divorce decree.

I'm resigned to the fact that I'm going to have to order 2 copies from Texas and have them sent here.

state certified copies mean nothing to local Ampurs in Thailand. Check with the local ampur and ask them what they need. If they need said certified copies of your divorce papers then you have to take them to embassy for them to stamp. It may also require the US State department stamp as well. Just like any document leaving Thailand that needs to be certified legal in any other country must go through the Thailand MFA after the local ampur has stamped it. I have just done the marriage back in November and doing the opposite now to use our marriage certificate in the US with SSA and VA. Oh and your divorce papers will need to be translated and stamped by MFA if your local ampur actually requires them.

the copies are not the for local amphur, they have confirmed that they don't require them. My concern is with the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok in order to issue the document that states that I'm not married.

they don’t ask for them. You are swearing or attesting that the information is true and accurate. They don’t verify anything. You need the dates as it is requested on the document but they don’t ask or want to see.

yes, I'll try that. I got this information from the U.S. Embassy website, it doesn't indicate that "they" need a copy of the divorce decree. The website does mention that the local Amphur might need it but we've already checked with them and they don't.

3. On the date of your ACS appointment ensure you bring the following:

Appointment Confirmation Page

Passport

Appropriate fee and method of payment: $50 for the affidavit and $50 for the Certified Copy (if required)

Completed affidavit (All information must be filled completely and correctly and NOT left blank. The information is REQUIRED by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

A clear copy of the first page (bio-data page) of your passport if a certified copy is required by your Amphur

I would have if I knew where it was. 😀

I think that it was thrown out as part of my mass cleansing when I left the U.S.

I got married to my Thai fiancee last year. I went to my embassy in BKK and was told that if I'd been married before, I must show my divorce certificate to get the No impediment to Marriage certificate. I was also warned of the legal implications of making a false declaration.

I'm not worried about making a false declaration. I'm definitely divorced I just don't have copies of any paperwork.

I didn't mean to imply you were likely to make a false declaration....apologies if I came across that way. I think it just shows how seriously the embassy look at everything before issuing the CONI. Fortunately I had my divorce papers but even after I presented them, I had to return 2 hours later while they made a phone call, I never found out to whom but I got the impression they may have contacted some government agency in my home country.
