TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers applying for a Thailand TR visa might be questioned about their return ticket, especially by airlines. While Thai immigration is aware that extensions can be obtained within the country, some airlines require proof of a return or onward flight to prevent boarding issues. Many expats advise obtaining a flexible or throwaway ticket for safety, despite mixed experiences.
Been answered so many times before. It’s not Thailand immigration that will have an issue as they know you can extend in country. However your airline may deny you boarding if you don’t have a return or onward flight for the time your visa (or exempt) allows. Not all airlines will care, but you don’t want to be the one caught out at check in. Either check with your airline beforehand or buy a cheap throwaway onward ticket to a neighbouring country that you never use. Many will say that they did it with no issue but probably be better to be safe and ask, or hedge your bet.
you used to be able to get a bus ticket out for less than $10. That option doesn’t seem to work these days 😀

I left in January with a 60 day return flexible ticket and a 60 day TR visa and was questioned if I was going to apply for a 30 day extension. When I extended my visa and tried to rebook a return a month in advance I was advised there were no tickets until July. It’s safer to get a 3 month return ticket if available, the flight caps are creating chaos for anyone wanting to return to Australia. Greg Hunt and Scott Morrison have no idea what they are doing to people.
Tony Cabello meaning I purchased a ticket out of Thailand to Singapore (cheap flight) 59 days from arrival (was never going to use it) but was told that on TR I needed to show it.
I arrived in December. I’m still here- living in Phuket permanently.
For the sake of a small amount of money it’s worth it for no hassle and ease of entry..

Just book a cheap flight like I did to a local country near Thailand. I picked Singapore as o thought it might look a more realistic that I might go there after Thailand. Had no questions from anyone asked on it- just wanted to see the ticket.
