TLDR : Answer Summary
The need for a return ticket when booking travel to Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa (extendable to 90 days) varies depending on circumstances. Generally, airlines may require proof of onward travel, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a return ticket. Travelers can book a cheap or refundable ticket to another country (like Cambodia or Vietnam) to satisfy this requirement. Some have successfully traveled without producing a return ticket. It's also noted that a 60-day single entry visa can only be extended once for another 30 days.

For me i,v found a one way ticket and a return ticked are nearly the same price ( dont know why ) i would book return flight , and change date on return flight if i did not want to come back on the date , found it cheeper and better to do

Doesn't have to be a return ticket - can be an "onward" ticket. Book a refundable or very cheap ticket that shows you're leaving the Kingdom within the required time.

I didn’t need a return ticket

I bought just to be sure, no one asked.

On a 60 day single entry tourist visa, you get only one 30 day extension. You can not extend it more than once.

I wasn’t asked at any point for a return ticket. If you do need one just book a cheap ticket to Cambodia or Vietnam. It doesn’t have to be cal to where you came from. Just has to be an exit ticket from Thailand if asked for one.

John Monk. I just change details from an earlier booking I've saved on my computer, print that and show it. Works every time. Doesn't cost me a cent. Man people need to use their brains

Ryan Proulx. Good luck booking a ticket to Vietnam and Cambodia!

it’s not hard to book the ticket. Go on any website and find a ticket and book it.

If you don’t plan to use it anyway then it doesn’t matter if it will be cancelled or not.

It’s a solution to having an exit ticket if you don’t know when you want to leave or are forced to have an exit ‘booked’

Ryan Proulx. So isn't it more sense to book a ticket to a destination where planes are actually flying? And why book a cheapie?. You book a flexi ticket on your credit card, you get a full refund.

I was providing an option for the OP. if you don't know when you plan to leave but 'need to have a booked exit' ticket, this is an option. a Flexi ticket would require a date to be put in, but if you don't know when you want to leave, if you keep making changes it'll probably cost more. plus flexible tickets cost a lot more!

Book a flight with a cheap changeable return fee

Most tickets are super flexible now, one benefit from covid is that airlines are a lot more reasonable and accomodating

Most likely the airline will require a return ticket. Just book a refundable one way ticket.
