TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement for a return trip when coming to Thailand depends on the type of visa you are applying for. For a tourist visa or visa exemption, an onward or return ticket is generally required, as noted in the Certificate of Entry (COE) application. However, there are instances where some airlines may allow one-way flights without a return ticket, but this is at their discretion. For long-term visas, such as for a stay of 3 months or more, a return or onward ticket is typically not required. Ultimately, it is wise to check with the specific embassy and airline regarding your travel plans.

For long term visas (3 months or more) there is no requirement for an outward flight.
if on long stay you can stay indefinitely with the correct extensions.
I got friends here who have not left Thailand in twenty years, why would they need a return ticket.
I believe London has its fair share of Alcoholics as well as i think you prove. Many in Wales also which is why i dont live there nor do i drink Alcohol.
so as advised earlier you don’t need a return or onward ticket for a long term visa. I won’t keep arguing the point. Take it as gospel or ignore it. Your call.
I can’t advise you to not have a return (onward) flight. I’m just saying you don’t need one if you have a long term visa. The embassy or airline may insist but all I’m saying is that you actually don’t need one.
in all the years I have been flying here, i have been stopped by airlines twice for not having a return and both those times i was coming in on visa exemption
I’ve googled it as commanded but can’t find a rule where you have to have a return flight for a long term visa. Any specific URL? If it exists they’re wrong, but embassies aren’t known to be 100% accurate on their websites, especially with rules that are specific to entry into Thailand and local immigration laws.
The airline may question, but they’d be in the wrong. I couldn’t say it doesn’t happen but the rules are that you don’t need one.

It seems it’s completely at the discretion of the embassy you are applying at and the airline if they will let you have a one way flight. Some do some don’t. Probably best to make a outward flight that is changeable just in case either have issues.

There are reports some people have had COEs approved without them but then you have the risk of the airline stopping you.
