I plan on coming to Thailand wherever they open. I plan on getting the 60 day tourist visa before I get there and getting an extension for another 30 days while I’m there. My question is:
1. Do I have to get a round trip plane ticket or can I just buy a one way?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa, it is generally required to have an onward or return ticket. However, experiences vary greatly among travelers. Some have successfully arrived with only one-way tickets without issues, while others have faced scrutiny from airlines or immigration, particularly regarding proof of onward travel. Given the evolving nature of travel regulations, especially following COVID-19, it's advisable to check the latest requirements close to your travel date and consider purchasing a refundable ticket or one that allows for changes to avoid potential problems.
Is suppose it depends on where your applying for your visa. Tourist visa applications have arrival date, departure date and flight details of coming and going. So I assume if your on tourist visa, your exactly that. A tourist, and can only stay a certain amount of time.

Surprisingly a one way worked for me. I got the visa before coming and just told them I might want to extend my stay.

I once had to buy a flight ticket and book some accommodation online while I was sent away from the immigration desk in Goa. Not sure if the Thai immigration would be as forgiving right now. It would be harsh to send you back on that. But for the sake of it you should just buy the cheapest ticket out of Thailand from the cheapest international airport, although I believe bus tickets also qualify. But again, I find that a one way ticket is 75% of the cost of the return flight, so chose a return flight flight with a low fee to change the date. 👍

If you are worried, buy an onward ticket that can be cancelled or a round trip ticket which you can change the return date on.

Phone the embassy they will guide you through it, you need to book your flight and have your medical certificate either same day as flight or day before
You also need insurance too there’s a video on YouTube of a guy that has done it explaining it all hope this helps 👍
no idea it was linked on a pattaya group I’m in which I can’t find it on and unfortunately it’s a private group, you should search YouTube maybe you will find it
I’m an ex pat wanting to return to Thailand from UK
How do I start the process I have a multi entry retirement visa untill March but I can’t get my head around how to acquire a plane ticket and get a COVID test and be in Thailand with in 72 hours

The process start at Thai Embassy in your Country. You must book and stay in a list waiting authorization to go (embassy provide for ticket flight). But only Élite visa are allowed to entry in Thailand now. Maybe in october they could be able to change something when experimentally will open Pukhet to some tourists.
have you contacted Embassy? I don’t think they are accepting retirement visas atm. But you can buy refundable/changeable ticket quite easily once you get permission. Then just a COVID test 72-48 hours before. Embassies have detailed requirements, including insurance

Normally yes, but everything is mad. I have been stopped twice in Tokyo and once leaving the Uk on a one way ticket. Can just buy a cheap air Asia phucket to Kl or similar for 1000tb or less.
But right now everything is crazy, and tourists aren’t aloud in
you might be questioned, I have flown from London few times Manchester couple times and from Brunei and never been questioned it’s up to him what he wants to do,
In such a case I usually could persuade the supervisor etc that I will get the visa n country or whatever
But one time this didn’t work when I was flying to ID from BKK so I had to buy return ticket to Thailand. Glad you never had any issues but many people did 😀
you were flying to ID from BKK, this guys asking about flying to Thailand I have never experienced any of these problems the only people that will experience this problem with immigration are the people who abuse the visa extempt and have more than a few stamps a year,
Last year I was pulled to the side and questioned on why I was entering so much with a single entry visa exempt stamps, (was on a one way flight) and stayed for a total of 8 weeks no problem
I have a friend who has overstayed every year for the last 4 years fly’s on a one way ticket and never been questioned by airline or immigration

The government policy, not the airline policy, is you have to have an outbound ticket. It does not have to be a round-trip ticket. You can get the cheapest flight out of Bangkok or Chiang Mai or wherever with the understanding that if you don’t use it you’ll probably have to eat the price, but that could be very cheap. That’s what I did when I came to Korea and I bought an outbound ticket to Tokyo, because I did not know when I was leaving.

Have you been to Thailand before?
You will need to fill out the immigration card that is given to you on the plane, this asks for your return flight details.
You will either put the details in or leave it blank.
When you go through passport control this is when you will know if you have a problem or not.

The value of your return/onward ticket even 60 days later is speculative.

I have always arrived on a one way flight with a 60 day tourist visa. When you apply for the visa you need to upload a copy of your flight. I always upload my one way flight and has never been a problem.
yeah sure I’ll pm you my bank details and address just now

You usually need a round trip ticket to get the visa in the first place (depending on where you apply). But this is all academic as no one knows what the new visa situation will be when Thailand ‘opens’.

A lot will depend on the airline. Knowing that with a tourist visa you'll only be stamped in for 60 days many will want to see a return ticket or proof of onward travel within the 60 days before they'll let you board the flight.

Wait nobody has a clue what the regulations are going to be once the country opens up again. Lots of things may change so all the advice you are getting now maybe of no relavance

One way around the visa situation is by making a small donation to a charity that benefits disadvantaged locals and some of the wildlife currently neglected due to the lack of funds to keep open certain sanctuaries and there will be a government announcment about soon. crowd funding for sick buffalos is one popular current scheme and there are many reputable visa agents with this knowledge based on soi 6, walking street, lk metro and the surrounding areas of pattaya, if you join one of the Facebook groups, such as black list Pattaya etc you should find some contact details on there, on top of this it is not even really a large dontation that is required as long as it's a minimum of 5000thb. Good luck 👍

Under NORMAL circumstances, you need an onward ticket (not necessarily round trip). I would ask the question when the country opens to tourists again. I'd say things may have changed by then.
Darren *******
Strictly speaking you need a flight out of Thailand, it's hit and miss as to whether you get asked to produce this upon entry.
That being said, who knows what rules will be in place when they let tourists back in.

Mark Price I never said you didn’t need a exit ticket, I said you don’t need to put the flight or transport details on the departure card when you arrive.
To travel to lots countries you need to provide proof of departure flight/bus/boat etc. It is a legal requirement.
To fly into legally Thailand you need a ticket out.
Normally checked at the desk from the country you are leaving from.
You are misunderstanding what I am saying.
Which is clearly that you do not have to physically fill in the departure card on arrival. You physically fill it out on your departure.
Nothing to do with having an onward journey, that is a separate matter.
I’ve flown into Thailand at least 4 times a year for over a decade. Last year over 10 times.
Left Thailand on buses, cars, boats and flights. I would physically need a new departure card every time on exit if I filled it in when I entered. Immigration would lose their mind if thousands of people changed their departure cards details as they changed their travel arrangements.
So yes you are right, you need an outbound flight, can risk it but what’s the point for 1000tb phucket -KL ticket that doesn’t matter if you don’t get on the plane.
Christina *********
Mark Price yes because you are arriving into Thailand. 🤦♀️ you do not need to fill out the departure card until you leave you depart. Hence DEPARTURE card.
Jonas *************
They never asked to fill it in. I year-end 6 times to Thailand in 6. Months.
Vietjet from Saigon refused to give me boarding card is I didn't not a flight out
, So if about them.
I did ask immigration later If I needed ticket or, and they said no.
Not it's men clear they track down on people who only go out and turn around (in free days)..
And they refuse every of you try live here or they suspect you work here illegally.
It's expect thaoland to start issue longer tourist visa, because who's will start 14 days in Howell room and then have to leave within 2-6 weeks....
And yet, any contact can refuse you entry if your not permanent resident it citizen for whatever reason, even if you have valid visa
I heard you don't have to fly out. My friend buy bus ticket to Malesia. I don't know it's okay or not but that she did. When I travel before I don't know where I want go next, and fly or boat etc. Lots of backpackers don't know where they go to next and when. I can fly to Thailand but I can also fly my home country after trip example from Vietnam. I think embassy give you right answer.
Christina *********
Yes that is for a departure, when you exit Thailand. Not enter, you can leave it blank til you leave then hand it to immigration when you exit with your flight or car/minibus number
the problem isn’t usually on entry to Thailand, it’s being allowed to board the plane to Thailand. Although if you have a visa they don’t usually check because you usually have to have round ticket to get visa. So it’s pre checked at that stage.
that’s a fair point. Some airlines will say u need it. And then not check lol. I almost always buy one way tickets and have not been asked to produce return ticket in 70+ countries. But I know people who have. Hit and miss it is
