If I came to Thailand on vacation but decided I wanted to stay for a year, would I need to leave the country to apply for a student visa?
Answer summary
The conversation discusses whether one needs to leave Thailand to apply for a student visa (ED visa) after initially entering the country on a vacation visa. Several comments indicate that it is possible to apply for an ED visa from within Thailand, although it is recommended to speak with the educational institution beforehand. There are also remarks about visa regulations, including the inability to work while on an education visa, with alternative visa options like the DTV for those looking to work remotely.

I came on a 60-day Visa from the US that I got from the consulate Chicago. during that time I switched to a education visa.
that was for Thai language. the school will take care of the paperwork. you have to go every 3 months to extend the Visa. I think the maximum was 16 months?
at 8-month Mark you have to leave the country. to come back in.
at that point they will test you because they know you are on a Thai language Visa.
also every once in awhile they will come and check student attendance records they being immigration and they won't want you to be there with your passport and they will take photos from time to time of everyone at once with immigration officers and everybody smiling.
was a really good experience. I don't recommend an education Visa.
JazzyFlower6176 you can't legally work on a ED visa either inside or remotely from Thailand. If you want to legally work remotely from Thailand you need to leave to a nearby country and apply for a DTV based on Workation.
