TLDR : Answer Summary
When traveling back to Australia for the first time after receiving an annual extension on a retirement visa in Thailand, you do not need an exit stamp in your passport if you use the automatic exit gates. Instead, it is crucial to obtain a re-entry permit before departure to preserve the validity of your visa extension upon returning to Thailand.

Recently confirmed this. Exit stamp is not needed through the E Gate. You will receive an entry stamp when you show your multi re-entry permit, on arrival back into Thailand.

You need a re-entry permit

If you use the scanned departure lane with your passport...no stamp received. It's saved by Thai Immigration in their computers.
BUT be sure to have a re-entry permit in your passport to be used when you return to preserve the current ending date of your extension of stay.
